COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Yesterday, city officials cut the ribbon on a new splash pad at Benjamin Van Clark Park as the heat index climbed over 100 degrees—Mayor Van Johnson was among the first to use it. The park now has new courts and play areas—improvements made under the City of Savannah Recreation Re-Imagined project.  Savannah Morning News
  • Savannah’s third annual Peach Week begins today as 15 restaurants will feature Pearson’s peaches in dishes to raise funds for CURE Childhood Cancer and will run until Saturday, June 28. A Peach Sale will be held on June 28 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Blessed Sacrament Church — satellite sales are set in Rincon and Richmond Hill with preorders available until June 25.  Savannah Morning News

  • Tybee Island will celebrate Independence Day on July 4 with a bike parade at Memorial Park from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. — A free concert by the Prince tribute band Purple Madness is set for 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. before a fireworks display lights the pier from 9:15 p.m. to 10 p.m.  WJCL
  • Savannah’s Leopold’s Ice Cream is a historic shop that celebrated its centennial in 2019 — it still serves its signature Tutti Frutti and original flavors like rum bisque and lemon custard.  WSAV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Port of Savannah reported that May was its second busiest month on record, with cargo volume growing and trade demand rising—official data shows strong performance—boosting the local economy.  WTOC 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, Savannah city council will vote on the Savannah GPS plan that outlines six goals to boost public safety—increase affordable housing, upgrade infrastructure, expand public transit, and raise municipal service standards—and improve government spending. Wednesday night’s town hall let residents share their views before the vote.  WSAV
  • The Savannah-Chatham Board of Education approved the FY 2026 Budget and a reduced millage rate in a special meeting yesterday. The approval lowers the millage rate to 17.331, saving $2.8 million while keeping funding for staff pay, tutoring, and early childhood education.  WTOC 11
