COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nearly 2,000 people marched through downtown Savannah Saturday for the 'No Kings' protest where local activists opposed current government policies. The peaceful event started at Thomas Square Park at 11 a.m.—ending at the Forsyth Park fountain with no major disruptions reported.  WSAV
  • Crews will begin relocating utilities near Whitaker Street to prepare for an underground parking garage with 424 spaces near Forsyth Park, with 74 available daily and the rest open after hours. Homeowners worry that the project will bring 1,000 extra trips, noise, and disruptions to 150-year-old homes, and a 90-day stay has been granted on the lawsuit filed over the rezoning process.  WJCL

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A truck caught fire on I-95 north near I-16 yesterday, causing traffic backups—Georgia State Patrol has been contacted to learn about the driver’s condition.  WJCL

  • A man wanted for a May shooting on Congress Street turned himself in to police and investigators are looking into his connection to the incident.  WTOC 11

CULTURE NEWS

  • WTOC won the Emmy for best morning newscast for smaller markets after its coverage of Savannah’s 200th St. Patrick’s Day at the Southeast Emmy Awards in Atlanta on Saturday — the win shows the crew’s hard work and local talent.  WTOC 11

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The YMCA of Coastal Georgia offers Y Readers, a free afterschool program helping Chatham County kindergarten through third grade students build reading skills if they read below grade level. The program runs until June 25 and is supported by Georgia Power.  WSAV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Savannah City Council unanimously approved an ordinance banning urban camping in public spaces at Thursday’s meeting—defining camping as using public space for living and allowing police to seize property after a warning—and set a 90-day review to assess its effectiveness; some members expressed concern the measure could worsen challenges for homeless residents.  Savannah Morning News
  • Residents of Chatham County can begin making cooling assistance appointments today at 7 p.m. by calling 912-721-7910—clients must meet income guidelines and bring required documents when they visit the EOA Cuyler building at 618 West Anderson Street.  WSAV
