COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Georgia Dad Tribe—the first Georgia chapter of Lonestar Dads—was created by Savannah dad Michael Ramsay in April to unite more than 300 fathers from Bulloch, Effingham, Chatham, and Liberty counties ahead of Father's Day. As Men's Mental Health Awareness Month continues, the group donates a dollar for every new member to mental health charities.  WJCL
  • On June 8, 2025, several Savannah residents gathered near downtown to protest violence against immigrants—calling for local leaders to improve safety—and urging community support for affected neighbors.  WTOC 11
  • On Sunday, downtown protesters in Savannah gathered to contest federal actions after violent immigration raids in Los Angeles—local organizers said the protest aimed to keep the community informed and uphold First Amendment rights despite one isolated incident of violence that led police to detain a participant. The largely peaceful demonstration reflected local concerns about what some view as an overreach by the government.  WTOC 11

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A residential structure fire Saturday night displaced 12 people (6 adults and 6 children) and 6 pets in Savannah when firefighters arrived at the 600 block of W. 39th St. at 9:50 p.m. and found heavy smoke and flames, while the Red Cross assisted those displaced.  WJCL

CRIME NEWS

  • Savannah police responded last Sunday to a SWAT call at the Comfort Inn when a hotel fight led three workers to pull a gun—officers arrested Alexander Blanco-Medina and Jean Nieves-Ortiz and later completed a long search by arresting Yeiker Luis Arevalo Hernandez at 10 a.m. Monday.  WJCL

CULTURE NEWS

  • Savor Georgia magazine ranked the top 10 fine dining restaurants in the state with menus featuring dishes such as osso buco, dry-aged steaks and cocktails. In Savannah, Elizabeth on 37th offers Southern coastal cuisine in a 19th-century mansion with a seven-course tasting menu — optional wine pairings complete the meal.  Savannah Morning News
  • The Flannery O’Connor Childhood Home will host a Peacock Guild reading on Monday, June 30 at 6 p.m. at 207 E. Charlton St where local writers will present original poetry, fiction and essays to celebrate the writer's legacy.  Savannah Business Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Brian Kemp is leading a three-day trade mission to Canada—attending the Southeast U.S.-Canadian Provinces Alliance conference in Saint John, New Brunswick, which began on June 8 and will continue until June 10. He will be joined by First Lady Marty Kemp and Economic Development Commissioner Pat Wilson as they work to ease rising trade tensions from escalating tariffs imposed by both nations.  Savannah Morning News
