COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Old Savannah City Mission is hosting a free Christmas celebration on Dec. 25 with toys for children available from 9:00 a.m. until noon and a festive meal served at 3:00 p.m. Families & volunteers are welcome to bring toy and food donations.  WTOC 11
  • During the Big Give Back event on Saturday morning at the Civic Center, over 2,000 children received two Christmas presents each from more than 7,000 donated toys collected from local partners. SPD, WTOC and city officials hosted the drive to spread holiday cheer among families.  WTOC 11
  • Tybee Island North Beach Bar & Grill is hosting its annual holiday contest where anyone can vote for the best decorated Christmas tree to support local charities. The winning tree will earn a donation of more than $2,000 and be announced Jan. 5.  WTOC 11
  • United Way of the Coastal Empire announced that community leader Swann Seiler will be honored as the 2026 Woman of the Year at the Women Who Rule event. The luncheon will be held Wednesday, Mar. 4 at Savannah Convention Center to raise funds for transportation support.  Savannah Business Journal

  • Savannah will host holiday events from Dec. 26 to 28, including a Kwanzaa celebration at District Live at Plant Riverside, history programs and improv at Davenport House Museum and Front Porch Improv, a Metallica tribute at Victory North, and live music along the Riverwalk.  Savannah Morning News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Savannah startup Be Smart Home Solutions has helped about 1,500 households reduce rising energy bills by sealing low-income homes and installing energy-saving measures under Georgia Power's free EASE program. It will launch an air quality study near highways and ports early next year.  Savannah Morning News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Starting Monday, Dec. 22, St. Joseph’s/Candler imposed visitor restrictions due to rising flu cases. Visitors who are unvaccinated or show respiratory symptoms must wear masks and persons under 18 are not allowed, except as primary caretakers at Telfair BirthPlace.  WTOC 11

  • Developers won legal rulings to advance plans for a three‐story office building and underground parking garage at the southwest corner of Forsyth Park.   • Savannah State University named Thomas Howard as the new head football coach and the 28th in its program history. He will begin on Jan. 5, 2026 (after serving as defensive coordinator at Fayetteville State University where his team posted a 6 to 1 record in CIAA play).  WJCL
