COMMUNITY NEWS

  • After a delayed Friday tree lighting (with candlelit procession and caroling), the free 'Celebrate the Season' series at City Market continues today from 1 to 3 p.m with open-mic Christmas karaoke, a kids zone, live music, and seasonal treats, and will return next Saturday over the same hours.  WTOC 11
  • YMCA of Coastal Georgia (A Place to Dream) delivered 60 new beds to children living in Savannah Public Housing this holiday season. The program helps kids sleep comfortably and supports local families.  Savannah Morning News
  • Make-A-Wish Georgia hosted its annual Waiting for Wishes fundraiser in downtown Savannah on Dec. 12, raising over $130,000 in online donations & aiming to grant more than 60 wishes for sick children, according to CEO Tim Earlie.  WJCL
  • Divine Whispers Ministries and Wesley Community Center completed a 6th annual toy drive on Dec. 12 in Savannah by collecting over 300 gifts and adopting 15 families — the program will host another gift distribution next Friday at 10 a.m. to further assist those in need.  WJCL

BUSINESS NEWS

  • FedEx is processing about 230,000 packages (more than double normal) each day at its Pooler facility as holiday shipping ramps up. The 1,400 workers and 300 drivers on extra shifts ask customers for patience to ensure deliveries arrive by Christmas.  WJCL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • USPS is preparing for a busy holiday season as post office traffic rises. Residents must send mail by Dec. 17 for First-Class and Ground Advantage and by Dec. 18 for Priority mail. Offices will close on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1 (reopening Dec. 26 and Jan. 2).  WJCL
  • County officials said a water main break in Pooler/Garden City may cause low water pressure in Effingham, and crews are assessing the situation to restore service.  WTOC 11
  • GDOT has proposed safety improvements on U.S. 80 from Lazaretto Creek Bridge to Tybrisa Street, outlining three build alternatives per segment (including extra lanes and shared-use paths) to reduce severe crashes. Island residents remain split as feedback stays open online until Dec. 19.  Savannah Morning News

  • Health experts advise Georgians shopping for ACA coverage to compare premiums, deductibles, and provider networks as enhanced subsidies set to expire Dec. 31. Consumers can use the free healthcare.gov calculator during open enrollment ending Dec. 15 to guide their choices.  GPB News
