COMMUNITY NEWS

  • After a ceiling collapse on Dec. 9, Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church began holding services in neighboring Congregation Mickve Israel’s sanctuary & both congregations shared their long history of faith cooperation. The church plans to rebuild its ceiling by Apr. 18 while services continue in the shared space.  Savannah Morning News
  • Sixty Savannah children have received a free bed through the A Place to Dream program (a local initiative supporting families in need). The program is part of broader efforts to provide essential resources to kids in our community.  WTOC 11

  • Last week, local leaders gathered at Quick Start Advanced Manufacturing Training Center to discuss AI in the workplace with practical tips from Dr. Michael Butcher (College of Coastal Georgia).   • Tybee Arts Association will present *It’s a Wonderful Life* as a live radio show, offering a fresh take on a classic for local audiences later this week.  WTOC 11
  • City leaders partnered with the Lamar Institute to survey Whitefield Square for unmarked burials using ground-penetrating radar + the results will guide plans for a new historical marker by New Year's.  WTOC 11

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A study by University of Georgia researchers found that Georgia’s salt marshes have lost three-quarters of their belowground roots since 2014, a sign they may collapse soon. Coastal managers will use the findings to guide restoration efforts—such as adding sediment—to strengthen the marshes.  Savannah Morning News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • GDOT presented proposals for improving Highway 80 on Tybee Island at Monday's public open house, dividing planned changes into three segments and proposing a roundabout at Hwy. 80 and Tybrisa St to ease turning movements for touring buses and delivery trucks.  WTOC 11

HEALTH NEWS

  • Georgia departments are supplying every public school with Narcan kits funded by opioid settlement dollars—over 2,300 schools began receiving kits in fall with remaining areas set for spring, while staff will get training to help reverse overdoses.  WJCL
  • Select Medical acquired Landmark Hospital—a 50-bed long-term acute care facility—in Savannah on Dec. 9. The move will expand its post-ICU services, the company's CEO said.  Savannah Business Journal
