BUSINESS NEWS

  • Great Dane celebrated its 125th anniversary in Savannah — marked by a proclamation from Mayor Van Johnson on Dec. 1 at Johnson Square — honoring its long legacy in transportation and innovation.  WTOC 11

CULTURE NEWS

  • Saturday, First Bryan Baptist Church hosted Christmas in the Craw, its fifth annual event in Yamacraw Village featuring live music and arts & crafts by kids. Residents stressed preserving their historic neighborhood amid demolition plans, with event coordinator Anthony Maxwell emphasizing the need to save local heritage.  WJCL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At West Chatham Elementary, students explored many career paths during the annual Career Day Friday—local businesses and community leaders shared their expertise while Emma Hamilton and Frank Sulkowski gave students a behind-the-scenes look at television news.  WJCL
  • Windsor Forest High School has received a 12-foot artificial Christmas tree donated by the Windsor Forest Garden Club and now displays it in the atrium – the star reads 'Literacy: Our North Star' – as part of a new literacy initiative.  WJCL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Tybee Island Marine Science Center is hosting Whale Week this week to educate locals about endangered North Atlantic right whales and urge boaters to practice safe navigation and reduce plastic use (fewer than 384 remain).  WTOC 11
  • Aerial survey teams discovered a young right whale entangled in heavy rope about 10 miles off Jekyll Island on Dec. 3, sparking a multiagency rescue. Rescue crews removed most of the rope over three days while a piece remained in its jaw, highlighting ongoing risks for endangered whales.  Savannah Morning News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • During the recent federal shutdown, Fort Stewart Fire Rescue kept responding to emergencies on and around the base — from a smoking military tank fire to a small plane crash. Officials said the images highlight that emergency services never stop even when federal operations pause.  WJCL

HEALTH NEWS

  • Georgia is installing overdose reversal kits in all 2,300 public schools, including those in Savannah, using legal settlement funds; distribution began in the fall and will finish by spring. School staff will also be trained to use the medication (Narcan).  Savannah Morning News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Three Southeast Georgia football teams advanced to the GHSA state championships and will play at Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta Dec. 15–18. Benedictine beat Marist 28–20, Calvary Day won over Fellowship Christian 24–7, and Toombs County outscored Heard County 40–14 for a chance at a state title.  WJCL
  • Benedictine held on to beat Marist 28-20 in the State 4-A semifinals on Friday, Dec. 5 at Memorial Stadium and will now advance to the state title game.  Savannah Morning News
