COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The sixth annual Canady's Coats for Kids Drive will help local children receive free coats this winter. Organizers call on community members to donate gently used or new coats to support families in Savannah.  WTOC 11
  • WTOC partnered with the Savannah Police to launch the Big Give Back Toy Drive that will support over 1,000 local kids by collecting new, unwrapped toys at its studio and three Walmart stores from December 1 through December 17. Live broadcasts will air on Wednesday at the Montgomery Cross Road location, December 10 at Abercorn, and December 17 at Whitemarsh Island (8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.).  WTOC 11

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Chatham County Coroner David Campbell identified Paula O'Brien (73) and Karoline Motley (45) as the two victims of a Wilmington Island house fire that occurred at 12:18 a.m. Sunday morning, which displaced ten residents and saw rescue efforts by eight fire crews while the cause remains under investigation.  WJCL
  • A weekend fire at Building N of the Commons Apartments on Wilmington Island killed a mother and daughter, displaced 10 residents, and prompted neighbors to drop off essential donations—including food gift cards, clothing, and hygiene items—at the Commons clubhouse during normal business hours.  WTOC 11

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Great Dane restored and converted a vintage 1953 refrigerated trailer into a mobile museum — to mark 125 years of business in Savannah.  Savannah Morning News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Georgia Power has proposed a 10,000 MW expansion that could add an extra $20 to customers’ monthly bills for years—its goal is to support the growing demand from future data centers. The Public Service Commission will vote on the plan on December 19th.  WJCL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • November was one of the driest on record in Savannah with only trace rain and most of the Coastal Empire seeing moderate to severe drought in counties like Screven, Bulloch, and Wayne. December will start with above average rainfall—official reports say this change is expected to ease drought conditions.  WTOC 11

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Coastal Health District is hosting World AIDS Day events this month to boost HIV awareness and testing for anyone 16 or older—the group held an AIDS awareness meeting Monday at the Susan Alt CARE Center in Savannah and will offer free, confidential tests on Dec. 11 at the Chatham County Health Department and Dec. 18 at the Glynn County Health Department.  WJCL
