COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Savannah Morning News has launched a year-end campaign with Journalism Funding Partners to fund solutions-focused reporting on food insecurity in our community. The newsroom will cover how aid cuts and other challenges impact seniors, children, and families—highlighting urgent needs as the holidays approach.  Savannah Morning News
  • Skate by the Sea opened Wednesday on the Tybee Pier Pavilion and offers free synthetic ice skating to all ages from noon to 8 p.m. daily until Dec. 14—city officials said the event also provides free parking from Thanksgiving through New Year's Day and encourages canned food donations for local pantries.  WJCL

CULTURE NEWS

  • Southern Living listed eight festive holiday events in Savannah—these include a 25th year riverfront boat parade, historic theatre shows, museum tours, Tybee Island beach days, and ghost tours that let visitors enjoy the city’s unique traditions. The guide notes that vibrant decorations and live oak settings add a special charm to the celebrations.  Savannah Morning News
  • Telfair Museums announced today that its annual exhibition, Making Marks, will have an opening celebration on Saturday, Dec. 7 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Jepson Center on York St. — the program will feature a special auditorium session at 3 p.m. that highlights over 30 years of creative art by local residents.  Savannah Business Journal
  • Eastern Wharf hosts a Holiday Kickoff Weekend starting tomorrow with the Lighted Boat Parade and live performance by the Fabulous Equinox Orchestra from 5 to 9 p.m. at The Park — the festivities continue Sunday with the Savannah Sunset Market featuring over 60 vendors, Santa photo sessions and a Holiday Wreath Workshop.  WJCL

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Georgia retailers prepared for strong holiday sales as a new NRF report showed shoppers were expected to spend nearly $900 per person with 63% shopping during Thanksgiving—households were forecast to spend over $600 on gifts and $300 on food and decor while Emory University economist Tom Smith urged shoppers to stick to a budget given recent interest rate drops.  WSAV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A new study in Nature Communications found that rising sea levels may flood a dozen industrial sites on Georgia’s coast, including sites in Savannah and Brunswick, by 2050 in a best-case scenario. Dr. Sacoby Wilson from the University of Maryland said flooding may spread chemical, microbial and mold contaminants—highlighting the need for improved disaster planning—if mitigation steps are not taken.  GPB News
  • Today, Savannah is in a drought with only 0.01 inches of rain measured at the Savannah-Hilton Head Airport and cold forecasts showing frost today and Saturday with milder temperatures coming Sunday—if no rain falls by then, November may tie as the driest on record.  WJCL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Chatham County Sheriff gave free meals to local residents ahead of Thanksgiving—this service helped ensure that families could enjoy a warm meal during the holiday. The sheriff's office worked with community groups to distribute the food efficiently.  WTOC 11

HEALTH NEWS

  • The City of Savannah issued a boil water advisory yesterday for about 142 residents in the Coffee Bluff area due to water main damage caused by a private contractor—city crews repaired the line yesterday and will flush the system for five hours to clear any discoloration.  Savannah Morning News
  • Thanksgiving leftovers must be stored safely by refrigerating them within 2 hours in shallow containers and labeling with the date so that food stays fresh—most leftovers last 2 to 4 days or can be frozen for up to 4 months with proper reheating.  WSAV
  • Federal Medicaid cuts have left many disabled Georgians and their families worried about losing important services—families like the Heymans experienced a sudden stop in benefits for their son in February. Experts say more red tape and lower funding may make it harder to get needed therapies and equipment, risking care that keeps patients at home.  The Current
