COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of Savannah and Second Harvest are hosting a 3-day food giveaway—starting today—to offer free food to local residents at several city sites.  WTOC 11

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Business leaders at the Savannah 2050 Conference met on November 13 to plan how to strengthen Savannah’s business role for the next 25 years. They focused on using AI to boost productivity across industries such as manufacturing, aerospace, and tourism — and proposed a five-county model to spur regional growth.  WJCL

CULTURE NEWS

  • WTOC reporter Dawn Baker has been selected for the Georgia Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame Class and will be inducted on March 27 in Atlanta—she has served Savannah viewers since joining WTOC in 1989.  WTOC 11

EDUCATION NEWS

  • WSAV partnered with GSU College of Education to honor teachers who give back every day—Shaheim Johnson from Effingham County High School and Alana Sandefur from Isle of Hope K-8 School received the Educational Excellence Award for their support in the classroom.  WSAV
  • Georgia will ban cellphones in all public elementary and middle schools starting next fall—teachers reported better grades and fewer disruptions after current bans. Lawmakers are debating extending the rule to high schools as 92% of 3,000 educators support it despite some parents wanting to keep communication open.  Savannah Morning News
  • Savannah State University marked its 135th Founders Day celebration today at Tiger Arena with a ceremony that brought together students, alumni, and leaders. The event featured keynote speaker Dr. Tomikia LeGrande, who received the Richard R. Wright Award of Excellence, and it is being streamed live to honor the school’s historic legacy.  WSAV
  • Georgia Southern University recorded its largest fall enrollment of 29,633 students — an 8 percent increase from Fall 2024 — and welcomed a record 5,946 freshmen, with 85 percent of new students from Georgia.  WSAV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials announced on Thursday that GA residents who received partial SNAP benefits will receive their remaining funds by Tuesday, November 18 — all other November benefits will follow their regular schedule. The funding decision follows a government vote and an act that funds SNAP through Sept. 30.  WSAV
  • The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety and local law enforcement are working to ensure all drivers and passengers buckle up before Thanksgiving—preliminary crash data showed 70% of fatalities last year involved drivers without seat belts. The agencies will launch a larger 'Click It or Ticket' campaign on November 22 and will check that children and pets are safely secured in vehicles.  WTOC 11

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Talki Foundation hosted the 912 Diabetes Initiative 5K and 10K in Savannah on November 13th. Participants ran in both races to boost diabetes awareness in our community.  WTOC 11
  • Memorial Health announced Thursday that it collected 178 pounds of medication during its annual drug take back day in Savannah—partnering with the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office and YMCA of Coastal Georgia—West Chatham Branch to help warn residents about the dangers of prescription drug misuse. The event was part of the DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day and contributed to a nationwide total of 571,054 pounds collected.  WSAV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Savannah high school athletes finished their college signings with Richmond Hill’s Kendrick Joshua joining UGA to run hurdles and the 4x400 relay team—other athletes in golf, volleyball, basketball, baseball and track signed with schools that match their sports goals. The signings, held between Oct. 30 and Nov. 12, mark important steps as these athletes prepare for their collegiate careers.  Savannah Morning News
