COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, Georgia restaurants are offering Veterans Day deals for active-duty and retired military—Smoothie King is serving a free 20-ounce smoothie from noon to 3 p.m. featuring patriotic flavors—and other chains like Applebee’s and Buffalo’s Cafe are offering free entreés and discounts to honor veterans.  Savannah Morning News
  • After Category 5 Hurricane Melissa hit Jamaica, Georgia’s Jamaican community rallied to send relief supplies—Elaine Smith from It’s a Jerk Shack organized donation shipments while Dr. Elaine Bryan noted that over 3,000 boxes were collected with more support needed for areas still without power and internet. The initiative continues to aid communities recovering from the storm.  WJCL
  • The City of Savannah is hosting its 79th Veterans Day Parade today at 10:15 a.m. along Gwinnett and Abercorn Streets to honor military service, but active-duty members will be absent due to the government shutdown—over 100 bands, floats and groups will still participate and roads reopen by 2 p.m.  WTOC 11
  • Veteran homelessness in Savannah dropped by 85% since 2021, according to the Interagency Council on Homelessness for Chatham-Savannah, which credited local efforts such as CSAH's Tiny House Project—helping over 165 veterans find new housing.  WSAV

  • Savannah has celebrated Veterans Day with parades for many decades. Past events have included marching bands, jeeps, and local military units—showing traditions that have evolved from the 1950s to 2024.  Savannah Morning News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On November 8, a bright fireball streaked across Savannah’s sky—sparking local interest as experts review video evidence to determine if it was a meteor. The incident has prompted community curiosity and further observation of the unusual event.  WTOC 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Savannah is monitoring weather conditions and will open additional warming centers if temperatures drop to 20°F—this plan involves partner agencies including the Salvation Army, Union Mission, and Comes As You Are Ministries. The CSAH Outreach Team will be available from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.—residents in need may also donate new cold-weather sleeping bags and coats at 7220 Sallie Mood Dr.  WSAV
  • As cold weather hits Savannah, delays in LIHEAP funding due to the government shutdown may leave low-income residents at risk—local shelters are adding extra beds to help those in need.   • On November 10, United Way of the Coastal Empire—working with local community organizations—compiled a list of resources to help families access food and other essentials during the government shutdown. HEALTH NEWS

  • AAA warns Savannah drivers to check tire pressure and battery levels and to avoid warming vehicles in enclosed spaces—cold weather today may lead to unsafe driving conditions. The organization also advises electric vehicle owners to plan ahead for reduced range and urges everyone to stock emergency kits before traveling.  WTOC 11
  • Doctors at St. Joseph’s/Candler used a robotic system that learns from past surgeon moves to find and mark a tiny cancer spot on Jamie Coursey's lung with a bright green dot for a precise surgery. The hospital team removed only the needed lung tissue so Coursey will leave the hospital in one to two days—showing a fast, early treatment for lung cancer.  WSAV
