COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Army veteran Brian Harlow will run in the 8th annual HonorMark race at Daffin Park Saturday to raise money for families of first responders and military veterans in need. Harlow (who lost his leg in Ukraine) says the donation that helped cover his care in Germany spurred him to give back to the community.  WTOC 11
  • Public ice skating returned to Savannah as the first skate night was held on November 7th at the new Enmarket Arena—this change comes as the city partners with the Savannah Ghost Pirates to replace the aging Martin Luther King Jr. Arena and provide access to an NHL-size facility.  WSAV
  • Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia distributed 1,000 food boxes on Friday to help local families hurt by a government shutdown that cut SNAP benefits and left some government employees unpaid. Mary Jane Crouch said they pre-purchased about $500K of food before November 1 to prepare for the crisis—plans are in place for future free drive-thrus across 21 counties.  WTOC 11
  • Pooler firefighter and former Army Ranger Lt. Alex Aguliar released his book—Warrior Leadership, which shares lessons on leadership drawn from his Army and fire service experiences.   • A holiday shopping event called 'Shopping, Sips and Santa' will raise funds for Tharros Place, a group that gives safe shelter to girls, on Nov. 12 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at The Fancy Pheasant—shoppers can sip drinks, listen to live music, and shop for a cause.  WSAV

  • Savannah shoppers can get early Black Friday tech deals with deep discounts on items like the 13-inch MacBook Air at $799 and the Apple Watch Ultra 2 at $649 — these offers also include savings on top headphones, speakers, and TVs to help locals shop ahead of the holiday rush.  WJCL

CRIME NEWS

  • On November 6, a School Resource Officer at New Hampstead High School stopped a student suspected of hiding a vape device and, when the student did not obey orders, he grabbed the student's book bag and handcuffed him, with the student now facing charges of disorderly conduct, obstructing a law enforcement officer, and possessing a tobacco product as a minor (an investigation into the officer’s use of force is underway).  WTOC 11

CULTURE NEWS

  • The organizer of the Hostess City Food and Wine Fest said they are ready for the inaugural event—plans include inviting local food and wine vendors to showcase their offerings.  WTOC 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Downtown Savannah will see traffic rerouted on Tuesday, Nov. 11 as the Veterans Day Parade will begin at 10:00 a.m. Street closures and parking restrictions will start early with no parking zones marked; vehicles left in these areas after the set times may be towed—ensuring a safe route for parade participants.  WSAV
  • Airlines began canceling flights Friday as the FAA reduced air traffic in response to the government shutdown—delays have affected 40 major airports. Savannah/Hilton Head International could soon see ripple effects—travelers are urged to check with their airlines for updates.  WTOC 11
