COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Food assistance requests at Old Savannah City Mission increased by 20% after SNAP cuts took effect, and meal attendance nearly doubled to about 120 as more local families, including those with children, began seeking help. Volunteers distribute food (every Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon) while the Mission partners with local churches and Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia to keep supplies available. WSAV
- ➤ Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia spent $500,000 in eight days to provide food for residents whose SNAP benefits lapsed during the government shutdown. The nonprofit will distribute about 1,000 pre-packaged food boxes from its mobile pantry at Memorial Stadium & Savannah contributed $50,000 to support these efforts while new SNAP work requirements will soon affect many residents. - ➤ Savannah State University has received a $100,000 donation from 2011 alumna Ms. Robin Perrtree—who discovered that local dolphins show unique begging behaviors—to fund the Dolphin Sciences Lab that has tracked Savannah’s dolphin population since 2009. The lab, led by Dr. Tara Cox, uses non-invasive photo-identification to study the animals and train future marine scientists. WTOC 11
- ➤ Deep Center will hold auditions for high school students to try out for Savannah’s 2026 SLAM Team known as Deep Flows — a movement for young poets to develop as writers and performers. Auditions will be held on Friday, November 14 from 4 to 6 p.m. with arrivals by 5 p.m, and on Saturday, November 15 from 1 to 3 p.m. with arrivals by 2 p.m at Front Porch Improv at 210 W.
