CULTURE NEWS

  • Actress Diane Ladd filmed her final movie role for Isle of Hope in the Coastal Empire in 2022—she died Monday at age 89. Film Commissioner Beth Graves Nelson honored her memory with a heartfelt social media post.  WSAV
  • Baldwin Park will host Savannah’s first Porchfest on Nov. 8 from noon to 7 p.m.—a free music festival that will feature over 30 local and national bands performing on porches and backyards.  Savannah Morning News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Savannah Technical College was awarded a $181,061.82 grant from the Governor's Office of Highway Safety on November 4 to boost its driver safety education program through The Coastal Georgia Center for Driver Safety. The funding used advanced tools like virtual reality simulators and Fatal Vision goggles—helping high school students, young adults and parents learn about the dangers of distracted and impaired driving in Bryan, Chatham, Effingham and Liberty counties.  Savannah Business Journal
  • Nearly 600 children lost early learning and care on Nov. 3 when 15 local Head Start programs in 12 counties closed due to the federal shutdown. Quality Care for Children is working with local programs and donors—raising funds for an emergency child care scholarship to support families until the programs reopen.  Savannah Business Journal
  • Local leaders signed a beam at the under-construction early childhood learning center in Hitch Village to mark a milestone in the project's progress. Mayor Van Johnson, Chatham County Chairman Chester Ellis and other officials supported the SPLOST-funded build—highlighting their commitment to early childhood education.  Savannah Morning News

  • Savannah Mayor Van Johnson said the federal shutdown has made life hard for families — especially those using SNAP — as many face uncertainty over their federal benefits. The city is partnering with local groups to use a $50,000 grant for a drive-through food distribution at Memorial Stadium on Friday at 8:30 a.m.  WSAV
  • The government shutdown is threatening foster care reunifications as SNAP cuts force parents to choose between food + shelter. Brightside Child and Family Advocacy warns that more children may remain separated from their families without increased community support.  WTOC 11

HEALTH NEWS

  • Hospice Savannah’s telehealth services are at risk from a government shutdown that ended the telemedicine waiver at the end of September. Executive Director Kathleen Benton said that 300 home patients will lose virtual visits—jeopardizing the care they need.  WSAV
