  • Food banks in Chatham County are preparing for a surge in need as SNAP benefits expire today due to the government shutdown & Second Harvest purchased extra truckloads of food to distribute across 21 counties. Local churches and pantries have reported a 20% to 25% increase in assistance calls, with over 44,500 residents relying on SNAP.  Savannah Morning News
  • Savannah Philanthropic Partners, a local giving circle founded in 2021 to support nonprofits aiding health and early education, will host a Nonprofit Sustainability Conference this week to offer discussions and networking for local leaders — the group will select its annual grant winners next month.  WJCL

CRIME NEWS

  • An 18-year-old fatally stabbed outside a Chatham County Walmart on Highway 80 was taken to Memorial Health for an Honor Walk — his organs were donated to help save lives while officials noted that transplant matches had not yet been determined.  WJCL
  • Myers Middle School Campus Police worked with Juvenile Court — and the District Attorney’s Office — after an incident on October 27 when several students reportedly hit another student during class transition, with school officials later enforcing disciplinary actions from the Student Code of Conduct.  WTOC 11

CULTURE NEWS

  • The SCAD Film Festival ended day six on Thursday night when director Craig Brewer received the Spotlight Director award, actor Oscar Isaac earned the Icon Award, and actress Tessa Thompson received the Distinguished Performance Award. The festival shows SCAD’s dedication to film storytelling as red carpet events continue with coverage Friday night.  WTOC 11

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Savannah-Chatham County Public School officials said that several students attacked a peer in the hallway at Myers Middle School earlier this week, and administrators took disciplinary actions per the Student Code of Conduct. Campus Police reviewed video evidence and began working with Juvenile Court and the District Attorney’s Office—parents are asked to remain patient as the investigation continues.  WJCL

  • Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr joined 38 peers in signing a letter to Congress on Oct. 24 that urged a federal law to remove intoxicating hemp products from store shelves—Carr noted the need for stricter measures after poison control centers reported more children exposed to these products.  Savannah Morning News

HEALTH NEWS

  • The FDA recalled some brands of Monarch Premium Kratom Powder due to potential Salmonella contamination—affected products such as Bali Gold, Red Bali, Green Maeng Da and White Elephant in various sizes had been sold nationwide between April 2023 and September 2023. Consumers who have the affected powder are urged to stop using it and contact [email protected] for a refund.  WTOC 11
