COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Chabad of Savannah will host former hostage Moran Stella Yanai at the Otis S. Johnson Cultural Arts Center at 7 p.m. on Nov. 3 — Yanai was held captive for 54 days in Israel and will share her story of faith and discuss violence against women — to encourage unity and compassion among community members. - ➤ Feed The Hungry is holding emergency food giveaways for local residents after SNAP funding cuts, with events scheduled for November 8 at Groves High School, November 15 at Johnson High School from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., November 16 at David’s Crabhouse with time TBA, November 22 at Anthony Lanier Foundation Carver Village starting at 9 a.m., and November 25 at John S. Delaware Center at 4 p.m. — these efforts aim to support those in need across Chatham County. WJCL
- ➤ Old Savannah City Mission is asking Savannah residents to donate food items such as 50 turkeys and 1,200 pounds of canned vegetables to help serve up to 600 meals on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. The Mission also seeks gift cards, bicycles, tents, sleeping bags and warm clothing to support its shelter and rehabilitation programs (donations can be dropped off at its warehouse at 2414 Bull Street). - ➤ SCAD Savannah Film Festival is drawing Hollywood stars like Sydney Sweeney and Miles Teller to downtown Savannah and boosting local hotels and restaurants. The event runs through Nov. 1 — local tourism leaders say the surge in visitors is strengthening our city’s revenue. WJCL
- ➤ SCAD celebrated André Leon Talley by premiering an 83-minute documentary — directed by Zach Stafford and Clay Haskell — at the Savannah Film Festival on October 26, and the film shows unseen footage and interviews while an exhibition at the SCAD Museum of Art runs through January 11. - ➤ The Davenport House Museum will host its second annual Fall Arts Festival on November 8 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Savannah — the free event features artisan vendor fairs, interactive art sessions, live music and food vendors at the museum, Historic Kennedy Pharmacy and Columbia Square. - ➤ On November 8th at 10:30 a.m., community members will meet at the SCAD Museum of Art (601 Turner Blvd.) for a 90-minute walking tour of West Broad Street, which once housed a vibrant hub of Black businesses, entertainment, and cultural landmarks. The tour is led by the Evans Center for African American Studies and professor Chad Newsom and is free and open to the public. The Savannah Tribune

- ➤ Savannah State University renamed the Literacy Lab in Payne Hall as the Jacquelyn Stephens Literacy Lab to honor devoted alumna Dr. Jacquelyn Stephens—whose generous support over the years has enriched the College of Education. The renaming took place on October 23 during Homecoming as a tribute to her lasting impact on teaching and philanthropy. The Savannah Tribune
- ➤ SCAD has finished phase 3 on its film backlot off Louisville Road by adding new sets such as a police station, mansion, bookstore, and auto repair shop—this upgrade will let students use real-world settings in daily classes and invite professional film productions that include student involvement. - ➤ Government-funded early childhood programs in Georgia will lose funding and may shut down on November 1 due to the ongoing government shutdown; Action Pact (serving 548 children and employing 187 staff in 12 counties) faces a halt in services that could soon leave many families without care. Officials warn that the lack of renewed contracts may disrupt childcare and add financial strain to local communities. WTOC 11

- ➤ The American Heart Association Southern Coast launches Hard Hats with Heart to boost heart health for construction workers and notes that 1-in-25 have been diagnosed with heart disease — impacting 343,000 people nationwide. - ➤ The Community Housing Services Agency, Inc. received a $1 million investment from the Erich and Hannah Sachs Foundation to boost affordable and heirs' property housing in Chatham County over the next five years. - ➤ Savannah State sophomore Alayah Birch was named to the Second Team Preseason All-SIAC Team for the upcoming 2025-26 season after averaging (12.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 1.4 steals) last season. - ➤ Savannah native George Atkinson, who began his football journey at Johnson High and became a key safety for the Oakland Raiders, died at 78 with his family announcing his passing on Oct. 27—memorial services are being planned. Savannah Morning News
