COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Savannah’s 20th annual Wag-O-Ween took place this past weekend at Pulaski Square, drawing about 3,000 people who dressed their dogs and trick-or-treated to vendors & joined in activities to support 12 local animal rescues. The event raised over $100,000 last year and sponsored 300 spays and neuters while celebrating rescues like Renegade Rescue in the community.  WTOC 11
  • The 75th annual South Georgia State Fair is in town through Nov. 2 and draws hundreds of guests with rides, live shows and food—visitors enjoy free entry for children under 5 and tickets of $10 or $15 on regular days while a 75th anniversary special today offers $5 admission plus unlimited rides at $15 when purchased in person.  WJCL

  • Today, The BrightSpark Group launched SPARK, its new leadership program for frontline hospitality leaders in Savannah that uses hands-on training instead of lectures. The program (led by founder Ewan Riccio-Laing) gives participants practical skills for daily work.  Savannah Business Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Miles Teller, the star from Top Gun: Maverick, spoke at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival to explain how the event helps local artists tell their stories—he said it shows fresh ideas in film.  WTOC 11
  • Film stars walked the red carpet on Sunday at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival — director Jon M. Chu teased his upcoming film Wicked: For Good and actress Zoey Deutch received a Breakthrough Performance Award. SCAD students watched the event with pride, and the festival continues today at 5 p.m.  WTOC 11

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Hurricane Melissa is now a major category 4 storm with winds of 140 mph and is moving slowly west near Jamaica as it rapidly intensifies over the Caribbean. Models show it will likely become a category 5 soon while staying well east of Savannah—reducing the risk of local impacts.  WJCL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Savannah Police Department offered Halloween safety tips today and announced police-sponsored events like Trunk-or-Treat and Blue Light Fright Night. Officers said neighborhoods will see increased patrols and trick-or-treating is recommended on Oct. 31 from 5-8 p.m. — aiming to keep festivities safe.  Savannah Business Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Memorial Health is hosting a National Prescription Drug Take Back Day event to collect unused medications safely and help prevent drug misuse in the community. The event offers a secure drop-off at one of its facilities and invites residents to participate.  WTOC 11

SPORTS NEWS

  • Three Greater Savannah area softball teams—Richmond Hill Wildcats, Effingham County Rebels and South Effingham Mustangs—are headed to Columbus for the GHSA Elite Eight tournament starting Oct 29. Richmond Hill will open its game at 11 a.m. against North Paulding while Effingham County will begin against Creekview and South Effingham looks to extend its winning streak.  Savannah Morning News
