COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Oliver Maner, one of Savannah's leading law firms, announced its annual donation drive on today to support Parker’s House at Union Mission — the only facility offering emergency housing for unaccompanied women experiencing homelessness. The firm will collect new unopened essentials from November 3 through November 28 at 218 W. State St.  Savannah Business Journal
  • Motorists in Savannah can expect delays on Saturday, Oct. 25 due to several events including Savannah State University’s Homecoming Parade, SCAD Film Fest, Pride Festival 2025, Wag-O-Ween and Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Authorities will reroute traffic on key Downtown streets—setting no parking zones to start at 12:01 a.m.—and advise drivers to plan extra travel time.  Savannah Business Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Patricia Ann West, a Savannah native and retired English teacher, was named queen by the SSUNAA Savannah Chapter for Homecoming 2025—she will lead the chapter at events such as the coronation ceremony, awards banquet and parade. The announcement was made by President Yusef Polite and committee member Sandra McCord Best.  The Savannah Tribune
  • The BAPS temple in Savannah celebrated the final day of a five-day Diwali festival yesterday with the Annakut offering, where volunteers prepared 300 to 400 vegetarian meals as an offering to their god. The event ran from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and welcomed community members looking to connect with their heritage.  WTOC 11
  • The Savannah Pride Festival will take place on Oct 25 in Forsyth Park despite a $30,000 funding loss from withdrawn corporate sponsors that has led to cuts in entertainment and tighter day-of budgets. Director Michael Bell said the event remains a safe space for the queer community — he urged locals to support through donations to help cover costs such as security and insurance.  Savannah Morning News
  • Hilton Head’s band Folderol with vocalist Candice Rae will perform at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Savannah on Troup Square on November 16 from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM featuring jazzy covers of pop, rock and hip hop music— a wine and cheese reception will follow.  The Savannah Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • SSU—one of 30 schools nationwide in the IBM SkillsBuild AI Freshmen HBCU Initiative—has required all incoming first-year students to complete a three-hour, self-paced course on artificial intelligence as part of their First-Year Experience; student ambassadors will help spread the word on campus. The program will boost digital credentials and prepare students for future job roles.  The Savannah Tribune
  • At Savannah State University, a weeklong Homecoming runs from October 19th to 25th — the celebration includes a Tiny Desk Gospel Concert, panels, a downtown parade and a football game with fireworks to close the week. The event marks the first Homecoming under new President Dr. Jermaine Whirl and brings together students, alumni and community members.  The Savannah Tribune
  • Savannah State University will celebrate its 135th Founders Day on November 13th at 9:30 a.m. in Tiger Arena, with keynote speaker Dr. Tomikia LeGrande (a 2001 graduate and current Prairie View A&M president) set to receive the Richard R. Wright Award of Excellence. All living former presidents are invited and nominations for the Cyrus G. Wiley Distinguished Alumni Award are open until October 31, and the free event is open to the public.  The Savannah Tribune
  • Hyundai announced a $5 million donation to rename the College of Education at Savannah State University today and call it the Hyundai College of Education. The gift is the largest corporate contribution in the university's more than 135 years and will support training programs, new scholarships, and updated branding set to launch early 2026 — a boost for local education.  The Savannah Tribune

  • Thousands of federal employees in Savannah have worked without pay as the government shutdown stretches into its third week, and local leaders along with nonprofit organizations are providing food and financial support — urging those in need to dial 211.  WJCL
  • The Chatham County Gang Prevention and Intervention Commission launches its Campaign 4 Life with a Friday Night Basketball Series called Beyond The Court on Friday, October 24th from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at the Frank Callens Boys & Girls Club at 510 E. Charlton St.—the monthly series will alternate events with the Habersham Street YMCA at 6400 Habersham St. and offer youth a free, safe venue with essential resources.  The Savannah Tribune

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Gary Thomas at St Joseph’s/Candler said local doctors are using new technology to treat breast cancer by offering less invasive surgery, targeted radiation and reduced chemotherapy — with clinical trials guiding these changes — to give patients better outcomes. He stressed that early screening using improved tests like 3D mammograms is essential to catching cancer early and saving lives.  WSAV
