BUSINESS NEWS

  • Yelp released its top 100 coffee shops list a few weeks ago and two Georgia cafes made the cut—Bitty and Beau's Coffee in Savannah earned a 4.8 rating and passed health scores as of July 8. The cafe, open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., is praised for its friendly service and relaxed vibe.  Savannah Morning News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The exhibit at the Jepson Center shows 50 costumes from Glenn Close's films and runs through Feb. 15. The center will screen Dangerous Liaisons (set for Oct. 23) as part of a series that spotlights her long career (over 40 years).  Savannah Morning News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A new study from George Washington University’s Milken Institute and the Commonwealth Fund warns that Georgia could lose 33,600 jobs and shrink its economy by $3.7 billion if enhanced health insurance subsidies expire next year. The report says that without an extension about 700,000 people might lose coverage—putting families like Savannah mom Lauren Seaman at risk as open enrollment begins November 1.  WJCL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Savannah State University is launching an initiative that requires all first-year students to take a three-hour AI course through the IBM SkillsBuild program—this training gives students practical skills and a digital certificate for the job market. Faculty may also join the training as the university plans to expand AI education to more majors in the future.  WSAV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The North Atlantic Right Whale Consortium released its 2024 population estimate on Tuesday—reporting eight more whales added to an estimated total of 384—and a conference will review the data as conservation groups maintain efforts to protect the endangered species.  WTOC 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tuesday, Port Wentworth officials put up the final beam at Ice Cove and the amphitheater—turning a forested area into a venue for professional hockey and community events. City leaders and the Savannah Ghost Pirates marked the milestone with a time capsule ceremony, and the facility will open in August 2026.  WSAV
  • The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office closed a portion of Highway 21 and 4th Street on Tuesday for forensic mapping of the fatal crash that killed 22-year-old Cindy Chavez on October 8—GDOT is developing a plan to widen the highway from SR 30 to McCall Road with public outreach planned after the concept report and construction set to start in 2029.  WTOC 11
  • Isle of Hope Volunteer Fire Department is fighting to stay independent from Chatham County’s fire system as Chief Tom Christiansen said it is not fair to end a 77-year service—county leaders will vote on the matter in January and local supporters have already signed a petition to oppose the change.  WTOC 11
  • Since October 1, over 225 federal employees have worked without pay to keep Savannah/Hilton Head International running safely during the government shutdown. The chamber asks community members to donate gift cards, meals, or money—support aimed at easing commuting costs for TSA agents, FAA staff, air traffic controllers and Customs and Border Protection officers.  Savannah Chamber of Commerce
  • At the third annual Governor's Workforce Summit in Atlanta, Governor Kemp called for a stronger, more skilled workforce to fill new high-paying jobs statewide—citing record investments and job growth—and introduced tools like the Georgia Match Program and Career Navigator to help students plan their futures.  WSAV

HEALTH NEWS

  • The mayor launched the Move with the Mayor initiative—promoting healthy living—to help residents improve their lifestyles. Officials said the program was introduced yesterday and will encourage more active habits citywide.  WTOC 11
  • Several past and current employees at Oceanside Care Center on Tybee Island say residents, especially those confined to bed, are not kept clean and help is delayed—an issue that arose after staff from Thunderbolt Health and Rehab joined following that facility’s closure. One former worker linked the neglect to her mother’s poor care that led to hospital visits, and management has not addressed the concerns.  WSAV
