BUSINESS NEWS

  • Three Savannah hotels—Bellwether House, Hotel Bardo Savannah and Perry Lane Hotel—received Michelin Keys awards for excellence from the Michelin Guide, marking them as top hotels in the United States. Seven hotels in Georgia earned these awards this year.  WTOC 11

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Coastal Heritage Society is preparing for Frogwarts—an upcoming event that will showcase local traditions—and organizers said more details, including the time and location, will be announced soon.  WTOC 11

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Frogwarts is offering STEAM activities at the Georgia State Railroad Museum—letting children learn about science, technology, engineering, art, and math through hands-on experiences. The program is running now at the museum for local families to enjoy.  WTOC 11
  • Savannah State University received a $5 million donation from Hyundai to rename its College of Education as the Hyundai College of Education—marking the largest corporate gift in the school’s 135-year history and a 10-year commitment with $500,000 given each year for academic projects. Hyundai will present the check at SSU’s homecoming game on October 25.  Savannah Morning News
  • Savannah’s St. Mary’s Community Center at 812 W. 36th Street is set to host the Fall Into Success Career Fair on Wednesday, Oct. 22 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.—job seekers will connect with local employers and explore new career opportunities.  Savannah Business Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, the National Hurricane Center is monitoring two disturbances in the Atlantic for potential tropical development—one is a tropical wave moving westward with a 30% chance to develop over the next seven days while the other is a non-tropical low off the Canadian coast that may become subtropical or tropical as it moves southeast over the Gulf Stream. With 12 named storms so far and the season lasting until the end of November, residents should remain alert to any changes in the forecast.  WJCL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Housing Authority of Savannah is planning to demolish the aging Yamacraw Village to redevelop affordable housing amid a 10,000-unit shortage, and the Yamacraw Village Residents' Council has asked for legally enforceable guarantees that current residents can return—raising concerns about the future of one of the city’s most affordable neighborhoods.  Savannah Morning News
  • The Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce said more than 225 federal workers, including TSA agents, FAA staff and customs officers, are working without pay due to the ongoing government shutdown. The Chamber urged local donors to contribute with gift cards, boxed lunches or monetary donations (the United Way will coordinate collection and distribution).  WTOC 11
  • Debra Goldwire, a local senior in a wheelchair, said CAT’s mobility service was unreliable when a confirmed bus did not arrive for her doctor's appointment, forcing her to reschedule vital care. Chatham Area Transit said it is reviewing its scheduling system and apologized for the delay to improve service for riders.  WSAV

  • This Saturday, October 18, The Collective Savannah and Blitz45 will host the Stronger Together workout from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.—raising funds for Spoil Me Pink, a nonprofit supporting breast cancer survivors and patients—at The Collective Savannah, 903 East 70th Street.  WJCL

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The city of Savannah opened 39 new Dundee Cottages to provide affordable housing for people transitioning out of homelessness—each cottage has a kitchenette, bathroom, built-in bed and front porch with rent from $650 to $850 including utilities. The project is part of the Housing Savannah Action Plan with a total cost of just over $6.4 million and a $3.5 million city contribution aimed at helping over 1,500 households by 2032.  WJCL
