- ➤ On October 12th, Liberty City Community Center hosted the Builders of the Bridge Honors program where Mayor Pro Tem Estella Shabazz and Co-Host Bro. Yusuf Shabazz recognized 12 local unsung heroes and sheroes—families, friends, and neighbors gathered to support the event. The program also featured emcees Dr. Lydia Rayner Syed and Camille Syed along with other local church leaders to honor the awardees. The Savannah Tribune
- ➤ The Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society will hold its 20th Annual Buddy Walk on Saturday, October 18 with opening ceremonies at 10 a.m., a one-mile walk at 10:30 a.m., and a Family Fun event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.+ Proceeds support Camp Buddy programs and Family Support meetings+ funds help offer educational opportunities for local families. - ➤ SCAD Savannah Film Festival will give casting director Cassandra Kulukundis the Outstanding Achievement in Casting Award during a screening of One Battle After Another on Sunday, October 26—this is the festival's first award for casting directors. - ➤ Fans packed Savannah's historic Trustees Theater on Wednesday night to meet romance author Nicholas Sparks as he celebrated the release of his new novel Remain — recalling his filming days on Tybee Island with big names like Miley Cyrus and previewing his upcoming film adaptation set to hit theaters in October with Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor. - ➤ Savannah State University announced Wednesday that its College of Education will be renamed the Hyundai College of Education after Hyundai donated $5 million. The donation will fund scholarships, digital labs, summer camps and teacher cadet programs—helping to address the teacher shortage as new programs launch in 2026. WSAV
- ➤ Savannah Technical College remembers its former president, Dr. Kathy S. Love, who served from 2009 until March 2024 and led projects including the Aviation Training Center, Dental Hygiene Clinic, and Student Enrichment Center. Current president Dr. Ryan W. - ➤ Today, the Georgia Department of Education released 2025 lists of Distinguished and Reward Schools that honor Title I schools for high performance and improvement. Four SCCPSS schools earned Reward School status, while Savannah Classical Academy Charter School received both designations—Shuman Elementary closed at the end of the school year and its students have been rezoned. - ➤ In late July, Sade Shofidiya inspected four honeybee hives at Tatemville Neighborhood Center in Savannah and checked hive records to ensure proper care. - ➤ The City of Savannah is hosting a ribbon cutting today at 10 a.m. for the Dundee Cottages, a new affordable housing community with 39 furnished cottages offering rents from $650 to $850.
