CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Davenport House Museum Fall Arts Festival is set for November 8 at the museum and nearby downtown sites in Savannah—where artisans will lead art projects, live music will play, and food vendors will serve treats in a free, family-friendly celebration. WSAV
- ➤ WSAV will air a Hispanic Heritage Month special on Sunday at noon and feature stories on local Latino restaurants that keep traditions alive, dance practices that unite generations, and the cultural importance of Quinceaneras (a celebration of heritage). WSAV
- ➤ During the Coastal Heritage Society’s annual Battlefield Memorial March, a new Revolutionary War Patriots marker was unveiled on the lawn between the Georgia State Railroad Museum and the Savannah History Museum—made possible by the Daughters of the American Revolution. The marker honors the fighters of the 1779 Battle of Savannah and links the city’s rich past with its vibrant present. WTOC 11
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ David Stephens, a full-time puppeteer who worked on Sesame Street, will teach college students in Savannah puppet design, fabrication and performance — showing how creative hands turn simple materials into art. WSAV
- ➤ WSAV’s Kim Gusby visited Gould Elementary School on Oct 9 and read her favorite book “I Am” by Travis Perry to 5th graders. Her visit supported the Savannah Chatham County Public School System’s focus on literacy—an effort to inspire young readers. WSAV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Public ice skating in Savannah will move to Enmarket Arena as the City prepares to demolish the Martin Luther King Jr. Arena—this new schedule will include youth and adult hockey along with open skate sessions from October 18 through December in a partnership with the Savannah Ghost Pirates and Oak View Group. - ➤ City leaders approved a new plan for upgrading the Canal District in Savannah—this plan details key projects that will soon modernize infrastructure and enhance public spaces for residents and visitors. WTOC 11
- ➤ Savannah City Council will vote on a new lease agreement for Olympia Cafe on Thursday — the Greek restaurant that won a bidding process to keep its River Street home in the Thomas Gamble Building — as part of a plan that includes a closure for renovations until the third quarter. The new lease offers an initial five-year term with an option to extend, replacing the lease set to expire on Dec. 31. WTOC 11
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Public skating returns to Enmarket Arena later this month as the City of Savannah, Oak View Group and Zawyer Sports and Entertainment arranged for youth hockey, adult league games and public skate sessions when Ghost Pirates events are not scheduled. The arena will host 13 youth hockey dates starting October 18 and six additional dates for youth practice, adult games and public skating from October 26—more details will be announced soon. WJCL
