  • An anonymous donor stepped in on October 4 to help Forsyth farmers’ market amid a government shutdown—market officials said the donation will keep it open until new funds arrive.  WTOC 11
  • On Saturday, October 4th, Savannah held Fallen Firefighters Memorial Day and Chatham County’s Memorial Week with 30 rings of the historic fire bell to honor 29 firefighters who died on duty or from cancer. City leaders including Mayor Pro Tem Dr. Estrella Edward Shabazz and Interim Fire Chief William Handy led the ceremony outside the Fire Department Headquarters — where red and white roses were placed at the stone memorial for each name.  WTOC 11

  • St. Andrews Anglican Church in Savannah held its annual Blessing of the Animals on Saturday to honor Saint Francis by offering prayers for pets and police horses—among them Otto—and a chaplain read the names of fallen firefighters with a bell rung for each.  WJCL

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Savannah area business index dropped by 0.6% in Q2 as consumer spending, port imports, tourism, and jobs fell—experts blamed trade policy uncertainty and cautious consumer behavior for the slowdown and warned that more job losses may come as mills close. The data shows a clear shift from recent economic growth with future reports expected to reflect further impacts.  Savannah Morning News
  • The Port of Savannah increased container units by 9% and used a new routing process—helping ships turn around faster—as research shows Georgia ports now support about 650,000 jobs. The state approved $614 million for infrastructure and plans to invest $4.5 billion in upgrades while Gov. Kemp says the ports drive the economy.  The Current
