- ➤ On Saturday, October 4th, Savannah held Fallen Firefighters Memorial Day and Chatham County’s Memorial Week with 30 rings of the historic fire bell to honor 29 firefighters who died on duty or from cancer. City leaders including Mayor Pro Tem Dr. Estrella Edward Shabazz and Interim Fire Chief William Handy led the ceremony outside the Fire Department Headquarters — where red and white roses were placed at the stone memorial for each name.
