- ➤ From Then Until Now: Short Memories of Eight Male African American Savannahians is a memoir that shares the personal journeys of eight locals who grew up under Jim Crow challenges and found support through faith and mentors. A book signing is set at Senior Citizens, Inc. Learning Center at 3025 Bull Street — giving readers a chance to meet the authors. WSAV
- ➤ Local firefighters Kurt and Ryan Thomas created the Thomas Life Capsule—designed to protect victims from heat, toxic fumes, and transport injuries—and demonstrated it at a recent Johns Island training, while they are now raising $25,000 on Indiegogo to build more devices for future rescues. - ➤ Savannah, the oldest city in Georgia, was founded in 1733 by James Oglethorpe who landed with 120 people on the ship Anne and planned a city with a grid layout that featured 24 public squares—22 still exist today. It was set up as a refuge for debtors and later served as a buffer against Spanish threats from Florida. Savannah Morning News
- ➤ Over 1,000 students waited in line for 36 hours to get discounted tickets to the SCAD Savannah Film Festival; they began lining up Wednesday evening and the ticket line opened at 8:30 a.m. Friday while tickets for the general public went on sale at 10 a.m. WTOC 11
- ➤ On Friday, the SCAD Savannah Film Festival in Savannah announced additional guests for the event that will run from October 25th to November 1st; Spike Lee will receive the Legend of Cinema award and Amanda Seyfried the Vanguard award—tickets are on sale now—and other honorees include Brendan Fraser, Kristen Stewart, Park Chan-Wook, Sydney Sweeney, Dakota Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas. - ➤ Savannah Mayor Van Johnson ended his Read with the Mayor literacy tour at Windsor Forest Elementary when students surprised him with an early birthday celebration—marking a highlight in the citywide reading push. - ➤ After a strong finish in Houston, the Savannah Bananas secured the top seed in the first-ever Banana Ball Championship series at Historic Grayson Stadium.
