- ➤ The Coastal Children’s Advocacy Center is hosting its third annual Stand Up. Speak Out. child abuse awareness conference today at 8:00 a.m. at the Armstrong Center on Abercorn—presentations, group discussions and a call to action will help residents learn how to speak out against abuse. WSAV

- ➤ A candlelight vigil in Savannah honored 131 domestic violence victims—bringing community members together to remember those lost and urge steps to prevent future abuse. WTOC 11

- ➤ The SCAD Savannah Film Festival announced honorees with Mark Hamill set to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award and Oscar Isaac earning the Icon Award—Dylan O’Brien and Zoey Deutch will receive the Lumiere and Breakthrough Performance Awards while tickets go on sale today; the festival runs from Oct. 25 to Nov. 1. - ➤ Nicholas Sparks will launch his 25th novel 'Remain' in Savannah as part of the Savannah Book Festival on Oct. 14 at Trustees Theater at 6 p.m. He will discuss the supernatural love story he created with director M. - ➤ Savannah recorded only 0.68 inches of rain in September — its 7th driest month on record — while moderate drought affects Vidalia, Jesup and Sylvania and severe drought touches parts of Pierce County near Alma; relief is coming with a few showers this weekend and more rain next week. WJCL

- ➤ Although the federal government shutdown began October 1, banks in Georgia remain open + ATMs, mobile apps and online services are available while FDIC insurance protects deposits up to $250,000 per account. Savannah Morning News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Sixth District Alderman Kurtis Purtee will soon hold a town hall meeting at Windsor Forest High School Auditorium to update residents on the Community Center at Windsor Forest. The meeting is set for Oct. 8 from 6—7 p.m. and follows city plans from April to turn Woody’s Skate Park into a public space. WTOC 11
- ➤ GDOT hosted a forum to talk about plans to widen I-16 from I-95 to State Route 67 over a 32.5 mile stretch + the state will pay $511 million for the project to make travel easier as local counties grow; construction will start in 2027 and the work will add a third lane in each direction. - ➤ Georgia gubernatorial candidate Geoff Duncan visited Savannah on Wednesday to hold a healthcare discussion at Silk Route Restaurant and Lounge with local nurse practitioners—he proposed expanding Medicaid and doubling the Georgia Rural Hospital Tax Credit using funds from the rainy day fund to address the healthcare crisis. - ➤ Effingham County officials plan to leave the Live Oak Public Library system to save nearly half a million dollars in administrative costs and to gain more local control—residents worry about funding, censorship, and job protections. The board will meet on October 7th to vote on the move and will complete the change by the end of June if approved. WSAV
