COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Neighbors on Wilmington Island say five pets died over the past year—three in mid-September—after a Chatham County aircraft sprayed an emulsifiable mosquito control product, with owners reporting signs of cancer in affected animals. A petition with nearly 700 signatures has been started to ask local leaders to change the spray method.  WSAV
  • One Love Animal Rescue will host a free pet vaccination and microchipping event on Oct. 5 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Daffin Park (Washington and Waters Avenue entrance) thanks to a Chatham Subaru grant. It will also hold a pet adoption event on Oct. 11 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Chatham Subaru (100 Kita Ave. in Pooler) for pets seeking new homes.  WSAV

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Savannah Pirates Museum opened yesterday at City Market—presenting artifacts and interactive exhibits that recall the region's seafaring past. Officials said the museum is expected to attract visitors and celebrate local heritage.  WTOC 11
  • Savannah’s Marty Milquetoast presents 'Paranormal Activi-tease,' a one-night-only show with drag, burlesque, a local art sale, a Savannah Paranormal mini-museum and the Assembly of Phantasms Gothic Choir. The event will take place on Oct. 2 at 8:00 p.m. at Club One — tickets cost $15 —.  WSAV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools reported an 87.2% graduation rate in 2025—matching the state achievement and rising .4% from last year. Three schools reached a 100% rate and Superintendent Denise Watts credited the outcome to strong support from educators, staff, and families.  WSAV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A new ASMFC assessment shows that southern red drum became overfished along Georgia’s coast because fishing rules have not changed since 2002—charter captains say daily catches have dropped from around 50 to four. State officials held a Sept. 24 town meeting where local anglers voiced concerns and public hearings will let the community weigh in on new fishing rules.  Savannah Morning News

  • Chatham County emergency officials monitored Imelda as it strengthened in the Atlantic and was expected to become a hurricane on Monday, staying offshore but close enough to cause rough surf and flooding along the coast. They prepared response teams and inspected shelter sites—urging residents to secure outdoor items and update emergency kits.  WSAV
  • Nearly 1,000 senior Georgians lost part-time jobs when the Department of Labor halted funds for the job training program on July 1 — local agencies report that many now struggle to cover basic bills.  The Current

HEALTH NEWS

  • An 18-year-old Savannah teen survived a rare heart surgery that used two pumps—one for the left ventricle and one for the right, making him one of only two patients in the country to leave the hospital. Andrew Miles is now focused on recovery with plans to get a service dog even though he cannot swim.  WJCL
  • The Healing Heroes fashion show will honor local breast cancer survivors on Oct. 4 from 10:00 a.m. to noon at the Nancy N. and J.C. Lewis Cancer & Research Pavilion—an event started by WSAV’s Tina Tyus-Shaw in 2022 and joined by St. Joseph’s/Candler and other local businesses.  WSAV
