COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hundreds gathered yesterday at Daffin Park for the fourth annual Peace in the Park event where organizers honored local peacebuilders with awards and led activities such as wearing yellow pins and forming a human peace sign — a display of the community’s commitment to nonviolence. Leaders Jill Cardenas and Molly Lieberman stressed the need for peaceful conflict resolution during this community celebration.  WJCL

CULTURE NEWS

  • A local historian from the Bonaventure Historical Society has spent over a year gathering nearly 3,500 names of veterans buried in Bonaventure Cemetery and plans to expand his list to around 4,000—he will publish his database online.  WTOC 11
  • Shamrock+ is a Savannah-based service-disabled veteran-owned firm that has been giving media support to the Children’s Museum of Pooler since May; it has made photos, 3D virtual tours, drone videos, and highlight reels to boost the museum's profile. The museum now works from its temporary space at Tanger Outlets Suite 191 and offers hands-on exhibits for local families.  Savannah Business Journal
  • The Savannah Philharmonic held its fifth annual Phil the Neighborhoods concert series this past weekend with outdoor music at Victory Heights and Tiedman Park—Friday’s show at Hunter Army Airfield was canceled due to rain. The series will return on Oct. 10 at Habersham YMCA at 6 p.m., giving neighbors another chance to enjoy live music.  WJCL

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Governor Brian Kemp announced on Friday that in 2024 Georgia broke its tourism record for the third straight year as 174.2 million visitors spent $45.2 billion in hotels, restaurants, and attractions. The announcement made at the Savannah Convention Center also noted that the state ranks No.5 in oversight visitation for the fifth time—showing the strong economic impact of tourism.  WSAV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Tropical Depression Nine, with winds of 35 mph and a pressure of 1007 mb, is moving slowly north and will get stronger into Tropical Storm Imelda today and might reach Category 1 strength—though Humberto, a major Category 4 hurricane, is expected to pull it away from our coast, reducing the threat. A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect from northern Florida to the Georgia coast, so residents should prepare for heavy rain, strong winds and high surf.  WSAV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On September 28, 2025, the City of Savannah moved to Operating Condition Three (OPCON) after concerns arose from Tropical Depression Nine and began activating emergency response plans for the next 72 hours. The decision set a clear framework for managing the anticipated cyclone threat.  Savannah Business Journal
  • The Richmond Hill-Bryan County Airport Authority will fund a $274 million airport upgrade with revenue bonds, fuel fees, and hangar fees that will create 12 new jobs, and Trip Addison said local taxpayers are not on the hook + the plan will use ground leases and private asset revenues to cover costs. A Georgia Tech review noted the project expects 180 aircraft to be registered if it is approved.  Savannah Morning News
  • On September 27, Savannah entered Operating Condition (OPCON) 4 as Invest 94L, a developing storm in the Caribbean, brought uncertainty while emergency staff were placed on standby and the National Hurricane Center noted a 90% chance of development in the next 48 hours.  Savannah Business Journal
  • The Chatham County Fire Department joined the National Fire Protection Association to promote Fire Prevention Week from Oct. 5-11 and urged residents to check devices using Lithium-ion batteries for safety, as damaged batteries can overheat and cause fires.  Savannah Business Journal

  • Renegade Paws Rescue visited WSAV on September 28th to showcase their latest rescue—Sunny Bunny, who is waiting for a loving family in Savannah. The organization invited local residents to consider adopting or fostering the pet.  WSAV

SPORTS NEWS

  • The city of Savannah closed the Civic Center on Sept 28, leaving over 300 ice hockey players without a proper rink—players now face an uncertain future. City leaders will relocate the team to a new facility in Port Wentworth for winter skating next year.  WJCL
  • Georgia Southern stunned No. 4 Marshall at Bo Pitts Field today in a historic upset that marks a turning point for the team—local fans now await the season's next chapter.  WJCL
