COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local community members are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with cultural events—music shows, art exhibits, and food fairs—that highlight the traditions and contributions of Hispanic Americans, and several gatherings are planned throughout the month.  WTOC 11

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Metropolitan Savannah Hispanic Chamber of Commerce hosted its 11th annual breakfast at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Savannah on Saturday, celebrating Hispanic culture—community members enjoyed music, dance and speeches about unity and resilience.  WJCL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Tropical Depression Nine is forecast to move through the Bahamas this weekend and gradually organize into Imelda as it heads north—models show the storm may slow and stall before turning east so that it stays well offshore, which means our coast will mostly face rough surf and rip currents with minimal rainfall inland.  WJCL
  • Tropical Depression 9 is moving toward coastal Georgia at 35 mph with expected tropical storm force winds, heavy rain, and potential flooding starting late Monday. The National Weather Service projects that Savannah will see 4 to 6 inches of rain if the storm stalls offshore—factors that could increase coastal impacts.  Savannah Morning News

FINANCE NEWS

  • Today, Fifth Third Bank announced that it will open 13 branches in Savannah and Pooler by January to meet growing regional demand — the move marks a major investment in the local market.  Savannah Business Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Friday, Gov. Kemp and the Georgia Department of Economic Development announced that Georgia broke tourism records for the third year and ranked No. 5 nationwide for overnight visits—local tourism officials in Savannah urged state senators to boost tourism funding in the Governor's budget for next year.  Savannah Business Journal
  • The City of Pooler distributed sandbags on September 27 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 900 South Rogers Street (across from the Fire-Rescue Headquarters), requiring residents to bring proof of residency and a shovel while limiting each household to 10 sandbags.  WSAV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Governor Brian P. Kemp and the Georgia Department of Community Health announced today that CMS approved an extension of the Georgia Pathways to Coverage™ program, which has served 15,427 beneficiaries and aims to lower Georgia’s uninsured rate — despite criticism.  Savannah Business Journal
