COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Mediation Center of the Coastal Empire will host the fourth annual Peace in the Park celebration on Sunday, September 28 from 1 PM to 4 PM at Daffin Park at Victory Drive and Waters Avenue—this free event will feature live music, face painting and awards for local peacebuilders at 3 PM. Community members will join a Peace Walk where they form a human peace sign.  The Savannah Tribune

CULTURE NEWS

  • Gray’s Reef Ocean Discovery Center will reopen on Saturday, October 18 from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM at 340 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in downtown Savannah — the center will feature new, museum-quality exhibits that teach visitors about Georgia’s ocean life. A Community Block Party will run alongside the reopening, offering free food, drinks, music, and local vendor displays.  The Savannah Tribune
  • Today, the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum opened the 'Beyond the Plate: Sea and Sky' exhibition featuring mixed-media art by Rob Strati that uses broken porcelain to create kinetic art. The exhibit runs until April 12 and will host special events—an opening and donor preview reception today and an art evening on Sept. 26—plus a free Family Day on Oct. 26.  WJCL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Savannah-Chatham County Public School System leaders reviewed literacy goals during their board retreat—emphasizing constant monitoring and tailored support for young readers. The system will host Family Literacy Night on September 30 and a Parent University workshop on October 4 to boost reading skills.  WTOC 11

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The National Hurricane Center confirmed that Tropical Storm Humberto formed in the Atlantic on Wednesday afternoon. It is expected to become a category 2 hurricane by the weekend — a sign of increasing tropical activity that may affect the region.  WJCL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • GDOT announced that I-95 northbound access at Exit 87 from US 17 will be closed for bridge maintenance during two weekends starting at 9 p.m. Friday, September 26 until 5 a.m. Monday, September 29 and again from 9 p.m. Friday, October 3 until 5 a.m. Monday, October 6 — detours will guide traffic via US 17, SR 144 and I-95 Exit 90.  WTOC 11
  • Gov. Brian Kemp’s office said South Korea confirmed its commitment to state and federal laws after a Sept. 4 raid at the Hyundai megasite near Savannah that detained 475 workers. Kemp will visit South Korea and Japan in October to strengthen economic ties as the state moves ahead with the battery plant project—an effort aimed at preserving jobs and investment.  Savannah Morning News
  • Georgia lawmakers are meeting to find new ways to protect children from harmful social media algorithms after a state law was blocked by a federal judge. Experts told the committee that platform designers knew their systems could hurt kids—this group will also look at age verification and meet on Oct. 8 to study artificial intelligence.  Savannah Morning News
  • The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office appointed McArthur Holmes as its first African American Chief Deputy during a pinning ceremony on Tuesday, September 23 at the sheriff’s office on 1050 Carl Griffin Drive in Savannah— a historic step in its 293-year history.  The Savannah Tribune
  • Community leaders and officials kicked off the SPLOST campaign on September 17th to renew the county’s 1% sales tax and raise about $700 million over six years for flood reduction, road repairs and public safety projects—officials said that early voting will begin on October 14th ahead of the November 4 referendum.  The Savannah Tribune

HEALTH NEWS

  • Flu season is near and health officials advise Savannah residents to get the updated flu vaccine early to lower the risk of serious illness (especially for older adults, young children, pregnant people, and those with chronic conditions). The vaccine is available now at Coastal Health District clinics, with drive-thru events scheduled today and later in October.  WSAV
  • Emergency rooms in Savannah have treated more young patients with chest pain and anxiety after energy drink consumption. Dr. Koehler at Memorial Health said children as young as 10 experienced high caffeine and taurine effects—reminding parents to carefully monitor their kids’ intake.  WJCL

  • Negroni Week is underway until Sept. 28 at nine local bars serving the classic Italian cocktail while Casa Guava Cafe has updated plans to remain open at 314 Drayton until year's end and the City of Savannah will review six proposals for the Thomas Gamble Building lease with a recommendation expected in early November—key dining updates for our community.  Savannah Morning News
