COMMUNITY NEWS

  • United Way of the Coastal Empire announced its 2025-26 board of directors, and members began their term in July to serve local partners (Bryan, Chatham, Effingham, Liberty, and Long). Cecilia Russo Turner was named board chair and will guide the organization to improve lives in the area.  WTOC 11

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Chamber Small Business Expo will be held Thursday from 3—7 p.m. at the Kehoe Iron Works Building where over 150 Chamber members will showcase their products and services while offering light hors d’oeuvres and music for networking as the event is free to the public.  Savannah Chamber of Commerce

CULTURE NEWS

  • Savannah recently hosted a group of French-speaking travel advisors on a three-day Brand USA tour that started on September 23, during which they enjoyed a docent-led walking tour in French, a salt scrub-making class at Salacia Salts, and a Savannah Riverboat lunch featuring Southern cuisine. They also explored Tybee Island, climbed a lighthouse for panoramic views, and spotted dolphins—before continuing their journey to Charleston.  Savannah Chamber of Commerce

ECONOMY NEWS

  • World Trade Center Savannah's inaugural Global Business Summit drew regional business leaders and a delegation from Quebec that visited for key discussions — including a keynote by Dr. Eugene Laney, Jr. — and the event featured panel talks on trade and tariffs along with updates from the Georgia Ports Authority.  Savannah Chamber of Commerce

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Savannah State University's Mechanical Engineering Technology program was reaffirmed by ABET yesterday—showing it meets top international standards, and the accreditation means students earn a respected degree that prepares them for high-demand engineering jobs.  WJCL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Forsyth Park is hosting the Pershing Cup today — Army observer coach/trainer teams drop in by helicopter for live-fire drills, obstacle courses, and endurance tests with public viewing from 11:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. Competitors from across the U.S. and abroad, including Hawaii and Germany, face these challenges in a contest hosted by First Army.  WSAV
  • Savannah Fire Chief Elzie Kitchen resigned on Sept. 19 and Deputy Fire Chief William Handy was named Interim Fire Chief—City Manager Jay Melder praised Kitchen for his many years of service.  Savannah Business Journal
  • The Savannah-Georgia Convention Center Authority closed on $398 million in bonds to fund the new Signia by Hilton Savannah headquarters hotel—marking the end of years of planning and collaboration. Local and state officials supported the project, which will break ground on October 8 and open in the summer.  Savannah Chamber of Commerce
  • McArthur Holmes was named new Chief Deputy at the Chatham County Sheriff's Office during a promotion ceremony held yesterday. Four deputies and three new command staff members were promoted—strengthening the department’s leadership.  Savannah Morning News
  • Community leaders launched a campaign to renew Chatham County’s SPLOST last week — the Nov. 4 referendum is expected to generate an estimated $700 million over six years to fund flood reduction, road repairs, and public safety improvements — as public input helped shape the proposals.  Savannah Business Journal

  • On Tuesday morning, Vira Salzburn and Mary Meeks talked about September being National Suicide Prevention Month and urged local residents to seek help if needed. They stressed that calling the National Suicide Hotline (9-8-8) is a key resource in southeast Georgia.  WJCL
