COMMUNITY NEWS

  • State Representative Carl Gilliard is hosting the third annual Fishing Rodeo and Family Affair at Daffin Park where families fish, enjoy fried fish and barbecue, and spend quality time together—continuing a tradition that began last year when the Georgia Department of Natural Resources introduced fish to the park's waters.  WJCL
  • Tybee Island surfing legend Randall Kato, who ran Kato's Floor Covering in Hinesville, passed away as his daughter confirmed on Facebook, and he was known for daily trips to catch waves. A paddle out will be held Saturday, Sept. 27 — a tribute to his lasting love of the ocean.  Savannah Morning News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Descendants of the seven ladies who saved the Davenport House and started the Historic Savannah Foundation unveiled a new monument today in Columbia Square in downtown Savannah to honor their work—connecting past efforts with future hopes.  Savannah Morning News
  • Savannah Performance Alliance will host the third 24-Hour Play Fest at Asbury Memorial Church on Sept. 27, where teams will write, rehearse and perform 10-minute plays in one day—volunteers, actors and tech crew are still needed to join the event.  WSAV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Initial unemployment claims in Georgia rose to 4,489 in the week ending September 13 (up from 4,196 the week before) as reported by the U.S. Labor Department. Overall, seasonally adjusted U.S. jobless claims dropped to 231,000 (down 33,000 from the previous week).  Savannah Morning News

  • Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools, the Mediation Center of the Coastal Empire and the Chatham-Savannah Counter Narcotics Team will launch the 2025-2026 Positive Peer Influencer program on Tuesday, September 23 — training 250 high school students to mentor peers at 11 middle schools.  WTOC 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The documentary 'Cancelled: The Paula Deen Story' premiered at TIFF on Sept 6, and former manager Lisa Jackson filed a breach of agreement complaint in Chatham County Superior Court on Sept 11—she says Deen said mean things about her. Paula Deen and her sons helped with the film but are not its producers—Deen has filed a motion to dismiss while settlement details remain unclear.  Savannah Morning News
  • Savannah Fire Department chief Elzie Kitchen resigned on Friday citing personal matters—Deputy Fire Chief William Handy, a 29-year veteran, was named interim chief as the city begins a nationwide search for a new leader.  Savannah Morning News
