COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On September 19, Friends of Massie hosted a Fall Community Conversation at the Massie Heritage Center to discuss winning ideas for Victory Drive—an important corridor known for its historic buildings and role as a major thoroughfare from west Savannah to Tybee Island.  Savannah Business Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • Renegade Pets reported that on August 21st officers seized 13 dogs in an alleged dog-fighting bust in Savannah—8 were euthanized due to neglect while 29-year-old Malik Anderson was arrested on charges including cruelty to animals and drug offenses, and 5 healthy dogs remain available for adoption.  WSAV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Jon Pardi—one of country music’s top stars—is headed to Savannah and a contest will run from September 22 through October 3 for a chance to win tickets to his show at Enmarket Arena on October 9. Ten winners will receive a pair of tickets while one grand prize winner will win a VIP backstage tour—complete with a behind-the-scenes look and VIP lounge access.  WJCL
  • Benedetto guitars are handcrafted in Savannah and are known as some of the best instruments for jazz. They are made with imported woods and some models take up to a year to build — with prices from $5,700 to $35,000 and support from award-winning musician Jocelyn Gould.  WJCL
  • The 44th Savannah Jazz Festival is underway at Forsyth Park with 14 free performances including a show by Eric Culberson that drew thousands downtown. Organizers require visitors to follow park rules—such as setting up tents along the perimeter and bringing cash for food—as the festival will continue until Sunday afternoon even if rain forces a venue change.  WTOC 11

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Hyundai announced a $2.7 billion investment in its Ellabell EV battery plant that will create 3,000 jobs, but an ICE raid on September 4 that led to the deportation of over 300 South Korean workers has delayed the plant’s opening by two to three months—Hyundai’s CEO, José Muñoz, has called for special work visas to bring back the needed expertise. He said both the US and South Korea are working to revise visa policies to keep the project on track.  WJCL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Local author and illustrator Rashad Doucet visited Juliette Gordon Low Elementary School as part of the Savannah Book Festival’s SBF@Schools program to share his love for drawing and writing with 2nd and 3rd graders. He took suggestions from the kids—like the idea for a coal mining unicorn that turns items to ice—and gave each student a signed copy of his book Art Club.  WSAV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Savannah Fire Chief Elzie Kitchen resigned effective immediately for personal reasons and Deputy Fire Chief William Handy has been named interim chief—Kitchen served since 1998 while Handy brings 29 years of experience, and the city begins its search for a new fire chief.  WTOC 11
  • Georgia DOT crews did a dry run in Atlanta to check routes, salt barn spots, and equipment for winter weather and will test plans in District Five—including coastal areas like Savannah—in late October or early November. The tests use hundreds of workers, salt, gravel, and snow removal trucks to get ready for bad weather.  WTOC 11

HEALTH NEWS

  • A federal Government Accountability Office report shows that Georgia’s Medicaid work requirement program, Georgia Pathways, spent $54.2 million on red tape and $26.2 million on health care since FY2021—indicating that much money went to administration rather than direct care. Starting in 2027, adults seeking Medicaid will need to log 80 hours of work, classes or community service per month, and the report warns that high administrative costs may limit coverage for many eligible people.  WJCL

  • A new list ranks the top 8 wedding venues in Georgia—offering options from rustic barns and historic Savannah mansions to modern hotel rooftops with varied price ranges and service bundles. Couples can review these venues to plan intimate gatherings or large celebrations.  Savannah Morning News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Almost 100 athletes from around the country will gather in Savannah this weekend for the Youth Goalball Invitational hosted by the Georgia Blind Sports Association—16 teams will compete in this fast paced Paralympic sport for visually impaired athletes. Two local players will take part in the event, which is set to give players a chance to feel a sense of normalcy.  WTOC 11
