COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Loop It Up Savannah will host its second annual Loop It Up Cup Golf Tournament on Friday, Oct. 10 at Savannah Country Club on Wilmington Island—proceeds will fund school garden workshops, literacy sessions, and mindfulness programs in over 50 schools. Registration is open but space is limited.  WSAV
  • Chosen For The Arts has launched its Holidays in Motion toy drive today to collect gifts for children of Savannah tourism and hospitality workers—partners like the Tourism Leadership Council are helping support the effort.  WTOC 11

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Hyundai Motor Company announced plans on CEO Investor Day to reach 5.55 million global vehicle sales and produce 3.3 million electrified vehicles by 2030. The automaker will launch its first Extended Range EV models in 2027 and invest $2.7 billion in its Ellabell plant—expected to boost production to 200,000 units by 2028 and create 3,000 local jobs with Governor Kemp offering support.  WSAV

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Savannah Performance Alliance will host the 24-Hour Plays, a fast-paced theater event where teams write, rehearse and perform 10-minute plays in one day — a challenge that tests creativity and adds a unique twist to local art. The event will be held at Asbury Memorial Church, 1008 E. Henry St., on Sept 27 with tickets available for $10.  Savannah Morning News
  • Savannah native Flau’jae Johnson is on the cover of Teen Vogue after winning a national championship with LSU. The 21-year-old discussed her journey in sports, music and community work—highlighting her Back to School Giveaway—and remains a top prospect for the WNBA draft.  WTOC 11
  • The Metropolitan Savannah Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce canceled its annual parade due to ICE concerns and will instead hold a celebratory breakfast on Sept. 27 at the Hyatt Regency. Local organizers also canceled El Grito de Dolores because of security and funding issues—while Port Wentworth is set to host their Hispanic Festival on Sept. 26.  Savannah Morning News
  • Hannah Beachler, the first African American production designer for Black Panther, will be honored with Variety’s Creative Impact Award at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival on October 28—she will be recognized for her work on Sinners and her bold design from the Mississippi Delta. The festival runs from October 25 to November 1 and will inspire local film and design students.  WSAV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Hyundai Motor Group announced on September 18 that it will invest $2.7 billion and add 3,000 jobs by 2028 to fulfill its earlier promise of creating 5,000 jobs in our area — the company maintained its plans even after a recent Homeland Security raid on its battery plant.  Savannah Business Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, lawmakers and community members gather at 2 p.m. at Georgia Southern University’s Armstrong campus in Savannah for a public meeting led by members of the Committee on Insurance Rates—15 speakers will share insights on rising insurance costs spurred by inflation and storms like Hurricane Helene nearly one year ago.  WTOC 11
  • The City of Savannah recorded over 1,200 drainage work orders this year after heavy summer rains stretched its stormwater resources and forced crews to focus on pipe repairs over canal upkeep. City officials will push for a stormwater utility fund to add trucks—doubling the count from three to six—and expand crews to support multimillion-dollar projects for future 100-year flood events.  Savannah Morning News
  • Today the City of Savannah’s Planning and Urban Design Department launched a public survey on local zoning rules for homeowners, renters and business owners in the Hudson Hill-Bayview neighborhood. Input will be accepted through Monday, Sept 22 at 5 p.m.—printed copies can be picked up from the neighborhood association president and dropped off at the Hudson Hill Community Center.  Savannah Business Journal
  • Citizens for Progress began a public campaign at Enmarket Arena Wednesday to support the SPLOST 8 referendum (a one-penny sales tax) that could raise $700 million over six years starting in 2026 for projects like road repairs and drainage improvement. Local officials from Savannah, Pooler, Tybee Island and other communities detailed plans for major projects including redevelopment at the Savannah Civic Center and key road improvements.  Savannah Morning News
