COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Town of Thunderbolt invites locals to experience the first-ever Golden Hour Jazz on the Bluff on Sunday, September 21 at 5 p.m.—a free event featuring smooth jazz by the Savannah State University Jazz Band and scenic riverfront views. Organizers urge guests to bring chairs, blankets and snacks—ensuring they can enjoy local to-go dinner and drink specials.  The Savannah Tribune
  • Workers returned the iconic Forsyth Park fountain to its home in downtown Savannah on Tuesday after a months-long restoration that took place in Alexander City, Ala.—the fountain is scheduled to resume full function in early November.  GPB News

CULTURE NEWS

  • St. James A.M.E. Church on East Broad Street in Savannah will host its Annual Day with an Old Fashioned Tent Revival on Saturday, September 20 at 4:00 PM—Rev. Dr. Byram D. McKinzie will lead the worship and old-fashioned hymns, inviting all to share in spiritual reflection and unity.  The Savannah Tribune
  • Tremont Temple Missionary Baptist Church celebrated Pastor Quentin J. Morris, Sr.'s 13th Anniversary on September 13 at the International Longshoremen Banquet Room with a banquet featuring dinner, dancing, and fellowshipping by family, friends, and church members. The celebration continued on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. when Bethlehem Baptist Church joined for worship—Rev. Paul Smith delivered the message 'THE JOY OF THE RIDE.'  The Savannah Tribune
  • Second Arnold Baptist Church’s Strength of a Woman Ministry will hold its annual Revival and Workshop on October 24-25 at 1427 East 37th Street in Savannah with the theme For the Glory of God based on I Corinthians 10:31. Minister Brittany Barnes will lead the revival at 7:00 p.m. while Minister Alberta Bryant and Sis. Shadia Daniels will guide the workshop with guest vocalist Brittanie T.   • Live Oak Public Libraries will wrap up its Porch Party series with a live performance by The Salt Flat Pickers at Springfield Library on Friday, September 19th from 5:30 PM to 7 PM to honor National Library Sign-Up Card Month. Georgia residents may sign-up for or renew a library card (with valid proof of address) as the event may move indoors (if rain interrupts the open-air performance).  The Savannah Tribune

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Georgia recorded $26.3 billion in business investments between July 2024 and June with 423 facility expansions that are expected to create over 23,000 jobs statewide—most growth came from local companies while international firms added $3 billion and 6,500 jobs, and the state is investing $18 million to ready more industrial sites in underserved areas.  WJCL
  • Two weeks ago, federal agents raided a Hyundai facility in Ellabell, prompting talks of bringing back skilled South Korean workers deported on Sept 4 to help with battery installation. Trip Tollison said the setback—though minor—will not stop the megasite project as leaders meet to fill the roles.  Savannah Morning News

  • Today, Savannah Technical College welcomed new board members Elizabeth Bennett and Jason Zdunich in a ceremony led by Judge Roxanne E. Formey—both were appointed by the Technical College System of Georgia and bring extensive expertise in education and leadership to support the college's mission.  The Savannah Tribune
  • Historic Savannah Foundation is hosting a lecture today at the Murray C. Perlman and Wayne C. Spear Preservation Center at 323 E. Broughton St.—Laura Seifert will speak on 19th-century African American education with a wine reception at 5:30 p.m. before the talk begins at 6 p.m.  WJCL
  • Savannah State University named Ms. LeAndrea Mikell as its new assistant vice president for Government — Community Relations, where she will manage presidential and institutional communications and build partnerships with government, business, and community leaders. She previously served as Executive Director for Governmental Relations — Community Engagement and helped secure nearly $20 million in funding.  The Savannah Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Chatham County leaders kicked off an early campaign Wednesday to ask voters to support a sales tax plan called SPLOST that will pay for road repairs, drainage fixes, and a flyover removal—projects designed to ease heavy traffic in growing areas like Pooler and Savannah. The measure will appear on the November 4 ballot.  WTOC 11

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Big, Beautiful Bill Act cut SNAP-Ed funding and Grow Initiative Georgia’s program, which taught over 1,000 Savannah residents to make healthy meals on a small budget, will end on Sept 30. Health experts say the cut may leave low-income families with fewer tools to eat well—raising their risk for chronic illness.  Savannah Morning News

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • The Ice Tub Club in Starland Yard now holds monthly sessions where people take cold dips, do yoga, and sit in a sauna—providing a social alternative to the usual drinking scene. Founders Hannah Eyre and Peter Van Brussels started backyard ice dips to help build mental strength and create a new local meeting spot.  Savannah Morning News
