COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Thursday, September 25, the Earl T. Shinhoster Youth Leadership Foundation will hold its 15/25 Jubilee at Dr. Priscilla D. Thomas Annex, 413 Wayne Street+ the event will celebrate 15 years of the institute alongside the 25th anniversary of Shinhoster’s passing and feature keynote remarks by Rev. Nelson B. Rivers, III.  WSAV
  • Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia is marking September as Hunger Action Month to support families facing food insecurity in our area. The organization distributed over 25 million pounds of food and logged over 12,500 volunteer hours last year—its Petals with Purpose event will be held on September 21st at 1 p.m. to raise further support.  WSAV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • HL-GA Battery Plant at the Hyundai Metaplant site is set to resume construction in the first half of 2026 — an immigration attorney for 10 detained workers said his clients will not return after facing poor treatment during a federal ICE raid. The detention, which involved workers from South Korea, Japan, and Latin America, may also lead to a pullback in future investments.  WJCL

CRIME NEWS

  • The Diocese of Savannah warned that scammers are posing as Catholic Charities to target immigrants using WhatsApp, text, email, and social media—asking for personal information and payment while urging people not to reply.  WJCL
  • After Homeland Security raided the Hyundai megasite in Bryan County and arrested 475 people for illegal work, SEDA CEO Trip Tollison said his agency’s priority is to get construction back on track—while federal investigations and questions about labor vetting continue.  WTOC 11

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Georgia Historical Society will host a free public showing tomorrow for Constitution Day, featuring a rare draft copy of the Constitution with handwritten notes from a Georgia signer — one of about a dozen in existence. Visitors can view the document and other artifacts from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the society.  WTOC 11

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Vanessa Davis has taught for 27 years and spent the last 5 years at Gadsden Elementary in Savannah where her second grade class turns lessons into adventures. She uses interactive strategies such as math scavenger hunts and role-playing reading to help her students grow — she compares teaching to planting seeds for a bright future.  WJCL
  • SCCPSS said a fight broke out between multiple female students just before 11 a.m. on Monday at Groves High School and staff along with BOEPD quickly ended the altercation with no injuries reported—three students now face administrative consequences per the district's conduct code.  WSAV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Forsyth Fountain reinstallation began Monday in Savannah after weeks of repairs, and Robinson Iron is ahead of schedule while Mayor Van Johnson said it will take weeks before the fountain becomes operational—its work will continue until November.  WSAV

HEALTH NEWS

  • During National Suicide Prevention Month, Chatham County Police's Behavior Health Unit connects people in crisis with mental health resources and follows up to ensure they receive ongoing help—adding support that officers say is part of a year-round effort. In 2024, the unit responded to over 200 calls for individuals affected by suicidal thoughts.  WTOC 11
  • A study by UGA shows that smoking or vaping increases the chance of getting diabetes, and Hispanic, Black and Asian people are at higher risk than white people. The study examined more than 1.2 million survey responses and found that vaping raises risk by 7%, smoking by 15%, and doing both by 28% — the data came from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System.  WSAV
  • CURE Childhood Cancer, an Atlanta nonprofit, has supported families of children with cancer for 50 years by funding research and providing financial and emotional help—many of its Savannah staff are former beneficiaries. The Memorial Health Community Benefit Fund donated $20,000 to boost these services and honor Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.  Savannah Morning News

  • Over the weekend, the Savannah Bananas entertained NYC fans with a sold-out Yankee Stadium game and a Tonight Show performance featuring live hits—Hamilton star Miguel Cervantes joined the team while baseball legends Joe Torre and Nick Swisher appeared and former NFL player Eli Manning played a playful umpire. The team’s lively antics brought sports and entertainment together for excited fans.  Savannah Morning News
