COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Edward Gizara, a Marine Corps veteran who served 16 years, was named Chatham County’s Veteran of the Year by the Veterans Council and now volunteers at the Savannah VA Clinic’s Grill and Chill event—he said he gives back to help fellow veterans.  WJCL
  • Renegade Paws Rescue visited WSAV on September 13th at 8:58 a.m.—showing Caspia, a rescued pet now waiting for a loving family in Savannah.  WSAV
  • On September 12, volunteers from Amazon, House Proud and the City of Savannah renovated four homes for seniors and veterans in the 912 Block at Treat Avenue and Hanson Street. Betty Morgan, a former veteran and teacher, received a surprise home upgrade with new paint and a bright red bench—adding a festive touch that honored her legacy.  WJCL

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A family-owned produce market in Pooler reopened on Saturday after a fire on Friday destroyed its walk-in cooler — no injuries were reported and the main building was not damaged.  WSAV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • International Paper’s mill closures have impacted the local logging industry as hundreds of workers will lose their jobs by the end of the month—ML Forest Products has begun shifting wood shipments to Brunswick and Fernandina instead of Savannah and Riceboro. The closures are estimated to affect nearly 1000 employees statewide and result in $3 billion in lost revenue.  WTOC 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Georgia Power filed its first contract proposal for a secret datacenter on Sep. 8 that is expected to use 80% of its new energy by 2031. Local groups worry that the lack of transparency may lead to higher utility bills—PSC will review new contracts to protect customers.  Savannah Morning News
  • Tybee Island City Council approved the $2.4 million purchase of a property on Butler Avenue to replace the old fire station. The new facility is estimated to cost between $12 million and $14 million, will feature five bays and bunk rooms, and will be financed through borrowing and bonds—ensuring a modern upgrade for the full-time fire department.  Savannah Morning News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local health professionals urged residents to get their annual flu shot soon as flu season will peak between December and February—SouthCoast Health hosted a vaccine clinic on Saturday to make the shot easily available. Director of nursing Suzanne Cosby said the vaccine can lower the chances of severe illness even if mild soreness occurs after the shot.  WTOC 11
  • A mile-long walk was held Saturday morning to honor 13-year-old Khyla Dennis—whose family founded the Khyla N. Dennis Memorial Foundation to raise suicide prevention awareness—and the foundation will soon host a 5K run to fund a scholarship.  WSAV
