- ➤ The Job Palooza hiring event held at EnMarket Arena drew about 1,400 job seekers on Thursday and more than 100 employers on Friday as part of the largest multi-county effort in Coastal Georgia. - ➤ On Friday, the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System held its first Attendance Matters sweep at 8 a.m. to fight chronic absenteeism as social workers and resource officers visited students who missed class—this effort supported the enforcement of the Georgia Compulsory Attendance Law with help from Juvenile and State Court. - ➤ Today the Savannah Tree Foundation announced it will plant and give away 6,500 trees in the next year to help restore Chatham County’s live oaks, which are expected to perish around 2040 due to age and development pressure. The foundation is growing 14 native species locally and will use its new Canopy Corps—four apprentices working 32 hours a week—to plant trees in low-income neighborhoods and public spaces. - ➤ Savannah City Council approved rezoning for a 200-unit apartment complex near Memorial Health University Medical Center on Reuben Clark Drive after two years of community meetings following an earlier proposal denial in 2023 due to traffic and flooding concerns—Columbia Ventures will use pervious pavements and partner with the city on drainage improvements to protect adjacent neighborhoods. - ➤ Tybee Island City Council purchased land for a new fire station because the current one is small and cramped—officials said the new facility will be state-of-the-art. Savannah Morning News
- ➤ Livestock producers across most Southeast Georgia and South Carolina counties are eligible for disaster recovery assistance from the USDA’s Emergency Livestock Relief Program to offset increased feed costs from floods and wildfires in 2023 and 2024.
