COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Savannah Fire Department invites community members to attend a solemn 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony today from 10:25 a.m.—11:00 a.m. at 121 E. Oglethorpe Avenue to honor lives lost on September 11, 2001 with the ringing of the Big Duke bell, an invocation, remarks from Fire Chief Kitchen, and the laying of a wreath for 343 firefighters.  The Savannah Tribune
  • Savannah Sunset Market begins today at Eastern Wharf with over 30 local vendors selling food on the second and fourth Thursdays from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at 400 Passage Way near The Thompson Savannah’s Stevedore Bakery—local food news also asks for Restaurant of the Year picks and calls for help with food insecurity reporting in Chatham County.  Savannah Morning News
  • The City of Savannah’s Municipal Archives is hosting a District 4 Community Archiving Event at the Savannah Fire Department Training Center (280 Agonic Rd.) on Friday, September 12th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, September 13th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Residents from (Kensington Park, Ardsley Park, Chatham Crescent, Habersham Woods, Oakdale, Bacon Park, and Parkside) are invited to share photographs, documents, and oral histories as part of the Savannah Community Memory Project.  The Savannah Tribune
  • On September 10, 2025, about 180 Army ROTC cadets and first responders climbed nearly 2,000 stadium steps at Georgia Southern University's Paulson Stadium as a tribute to those who died on 9/11 — marking the 24th anniversary of the attacks.  WJCL
  • United Way of the Coastal Empire kicked off its 2026 campaign on Sept. 4 at the Savannah Convention Center when nearly 700 community leaders gathered to support a $5.2 million Community Fund goal—twelve local businesses have already pledged over $800,000 in early employee giving.  The Savannah Tribune

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 44th Savannah Jazz Festival will run from September 19th to 21st in venues like Forsyth Park, with free events and some ticketed shows. Organizers expect about 50,000 people to attend—featuring acts such as Spyro Gyra and Kirk Whalum—and credit strong support from the City of Savannah and local sponsors.  The Savannah Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On September 16, 2025, St. Philip AME Church 'On the Boulevard' will join a national coalition to host National Voter Registration Day events at Savannah State University and on Alexis Circle from 10 AM — 6 PM, including a block party from 1 PM — 6 PM to help eligible citizens register before Election 2025. Volunteers from local partners will support registration efforts across the community.  The Savannah Tribune
  • Senator Derek Mallow said the ICE raids at the Hyundai mega site exposed corporate exploitation of undocumented workers by companies that avoid labor unions for fair wages and safe conditions—he called for a full audit of payrolls to ensure local taxpayers know where their dollars are spent.  The Savannah Tribune
  • South Korea’s government reached an agreement with US officials to allow over 300 workers detained at a Hyundai battery plant in Ellabell to leave voluntarily — a Korean Air charter plane left Seoul for Atlanta yesterday to begin repatriating the workers. US and South Korean officials are finalizing plans for their upcoming departure — the incident may affect the strong economic ties between the two nations.  WJCL

HEALTH NEWS

  • Members of the Gamma Sigma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority partnered with CAT to launch a Black maternal health awareness campaign on Friday, June 13 by installing posters on all 60 CAT buses serving Savannah, unincorporated Chatham County, and parts of Garden City— the campaign will run through September and expand to local university campuses in the fall.  The Savannah Tribune

SPORTS NEWS

  • Savannah State defeated Shorter 13-0 on September 6 at TA Wright Stadium after a loser's season opener, gaining 323 yards and limiting Shorter to one rushing yard—Coach Aaron Kelton praised key plays that helped the Tigers rebound.  The Savannah Tribune
  • Freshmen Quentin Brooks, Justin Woods, and Hayden Plybon shot 79 to lead Savannah State in a duals match against SCAD at Crosswinds Golf Course on September 4 as SCAD scored 306 compared to Savannah State’s 317. The team will compete in the Thomas W. Dortch HBCU Golf Classic in Atlanta from September 21—23.  The Savannah Tribune
  • Savannah College of Art & Design will add women’s flag football to its varsity sports program. The team will join the Sun Conference — with several other schools — as SCAD searches for its first head coach and plans its first season in Spring 2027.  The Savannah Tribune
