COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Eastern Wharf will host a seven-week farmers market series beginning September 11th — featuring local produce, fish, baked goods and artisan crafts. The market is held in the grass lot next to the Thompson Hotel's herb garden and will run weekly from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with a special holiday market on November 30th.  WSAV
  • AT&T & Goodwill of Southeast Georgia are donating 100 laptops to clients who complete digital literacy training to help narrow the digital divide for education and job searches. Earlene Irwin received the first laptop and said it lets her work from home when transportation is limited.  WJCL
  • Residents can pick up the Savannah Relocation Guide today to learn about neighborhoods, schools, and local businesses that help newcomers settle in the coastal region + Oliver Murray is coordinating box reservations for the guide.  Savannah Chamber of Commerce
  • On Tuesday, Savannah City Council said Forsyth Park's fountain will return on September 15 after its first major restoration since the 1980s—plumbing and electrical work will continue until the end of October.  WJCL
  • Dozens gathered Tuesday night in Savannah to support the Live Oak Public Library System during the week-long 912 Day festivities at Ardsley Station. Sips at the Station hosted the fundraiser with Savannah Mayor Van Johnson and local media—100 percent of raffle proceeds went to the library and the event will end on Sept. 12.  WSAV

  • The Chatham County Sheriff's Office announced Chief Deputy McArthur Holmes is the first African American Chief Deputy in 293 years of agency history—this promotion was shared on its CCSO Facebook post.  WSAV
  • Mayor Van Johnson said in a press conference Tuesday that the ICE raid at the Hyundai Megasite happened unexpectedly outside of city jurisdiction—he stressed that the city and police had no role in the operation and will support affected families while urging Hyundai to verify workers’ legal status.  WTOC 11
