COMMUNITY NEWS

  • People of Action Caring for Kids runs an annual summer social in Savannah to support its program that provides free prepared meals to dozens of schools in Chatham County—Executive Director Malina Stone said all proceeds raised help feed more than 5,600 kids in the area.  WJCL

CRIME NEWS

  • Families are still struggling after ICE arrested 475 workers from the Hyundai megasite on Thursday; Ana Victoria Ramos—daughter of one of the detained workers—said her father, who worked in construction at the site, remains unreachable.  WTOC 11
  • Aujawan Hymon, 20 from Savannah, was indicted on Friday by a federal grand jury for illegal possession of a machinegun with an extended magazine and conversion device—he was linked to a July 2 shooting at Oglethorpe Mall where investigators recovered the modified weapon.  Savannah Business Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Savannah Arts Academy students walked out of class and marched to Tiedemann Park to protest gun violence in schools. Student activist Zoe Wagner led the protest—joined by state legislators urging lawmakers to reinstate an assault weapons ban to protect students.  Savannah Morning News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Tybee Marine Science Center released two-year-old sea turtle Westie into the ocean after raising him from a hatchling—he swam away as the center watched his farewell to captivity.  Savannah Morning News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Chatham County Commissioners voted 6—2 to amend HB756 that changes the CAT board structure despite a pending lawsuit challenging the county's authority to alter state law. The move is meant to regain local majority control over public transit and is part of the county’s constitutional duty—legal challenges continue in court.  Savannah Morning News
