COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The City of Savannah’s Recreation and Leisure Services Department announced that in the second week of September, construction will begin at Daffin Park’s northwest corner to build a new ADA—compliant playground with a restroom and splashpad for children ages 2 to 12 that will last four months. Forsyth Park’s playground will close for two weeks starting in the first week of September as rubber surfaces and worn wood fiber are replaced. WSAV
- ➤ Pegasus Riding Academy needs volunteers for its fall program that gives therapeutic horse riding to special needs children. An orientation to train volunteers is scheduled for this Saturday, September 6 at 1:00 p.m. at the Old Roberds Dairy at 2500 Tennessee Avenue in Savannah — no experience with horses or children is required. - ➤ Today, Savannah begins its 912 Day celebrations with a pop-up event at the Coca-Cola Bottling Company as part of a week-long series that features a city-wide scavenger hunt with daily social media clues and a porch party at Bull Street Library on Sept 5th. Later events include a block beautification project on Sept 12th and a community concert at Savannah State University's Wright Stadium, with Mayor Van Johnson launching the festivities—aimed at boosting civic pride and highlighting local businesses. - ➤ Savannah native Ben Marshall has joined the cast of Saturday Night Live—he is a graduate of Savannah Arts Academy and a member of Please Don't Destroy that earned Forbes' attention in recent years. He will appear on new SNL episodes airing at 11:30 p.m. on local NBC channels. Savannah Morning News
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ A report by the Selig Center for Economic Growth stated that Savannah State University contributed $164.4 million to the local economy in fiscal year 2024—up 9.3% from the previous year—and spending on student expenses, personnel services, and operating costs supported local jobs. The Savannah Tribune
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On Wednesday, the City of Savannah signed an agreement with Savannah State University, Georgia Southern, and Savannah Technical College to offer paid internships for local college students. Savannah State University's President Jermaine Whirl posted on social media and credited Mayor Van R. Johnson, II for his role in making the partnership possible. WSAV
