CRIME NEWS

  • Chatham County Sheriff’s Office rescued 13 pit bull dogs from a dog fighting ring in South Savannah on Aug. 21 and arrested three men, Michael Scott, Rafael Bowens and Tyleek Collins, on dog fighting and drug charges; the dogs remain at Chatham County Animal Services awaiting vet evaluations and legal proceedings.  Savannah Morning News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, the City of Savannah celebrates 912 Day with a series of events planned across the community—activities include parades, live music, and local food that invite residents to join in the festivities.  WTOC 11

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A new report from the Selig Center for Economic Growth shows that Savannah State University contributed $164.4 million to the regional economy in fiscal year 2024 and increased its impact by 9.3% from the previous year. The study details how spending on salaries, operations, and student expenses boosts jobs & supports local businesses in counties like Chatham and Effingham.  WTOC 11

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A report from education data site Niche shows that many Georgia colleges offer high acceptance rates, with several including Savannah State University accepting nearly all applicants—five schools in fact have 100% acceptance—while Emory University remains highly competitive at 11%.  Savannah Morning News
  • Savannah Police will begin school zone camera enforcement at Beach High on Sept. 3 after a 30-day warning period that started Aug. 4—cameras run 45 minutes before class, remain on until 30 minutes after dismissal, and drivers exceeding the limit by 11 mph face fines of $100 for a first offense and $150 for subsequent violations.  WTOC 11

  • City officials reported five traffic fatalities in 2025, a drop from recent years that shows progress with the VisionZero initiative. Leaders say new traffic calming devices and lowered speed limits are in place — plans include a public traffic calming portal and projects funded by a federal Safe Streets grant to improve major corridors.  Savannah Morning News

  • Week 3 high school football games featured Savannah area teams on Thursday and Friday—Long County beat Johnson 28—7 and other teams like Benedictine, Richmond Hill, Calvary Day, and Windsor Forest competed in key matchups.
