COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Effingham County Animal Shelter in Springfield is waiving pet adoption fees until Aug. 31 as part of Clear the Shelter Month to help more pets find homes. Animal director Lorna Shelton said the shelter took in over 300 animals this year and needs Meow Mix dry cat food donations—families are encouraged to adopt a furry friend.  Savannah Morning News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • An iconic restaurant is celebrating its 70th birthday this September by offering a special waffle topped with cake bits, confetti crunch, and whipped cream at select locations. An open house at the Waffle House Museum in Decatur on Sept. 6 from 11 a.m.—2 p.m. will include a food truck serving free birthday waffles.  WSAV

CRIME NEWS

  • Savannah Police acknowledged a selectively edited video showing a suspect being slammed to the ground during a fight on Congress Street—Mayor Van Johnson said the clip does not show the full story and that an investigation will review body worn camera footage and officer reports per department policy.  WTOC 11
  • A jury reached a verdict in the 2021 murder trial of Travis Edwards—Harold Roberson and Terry Rucker were convicted of felony murder and aggravated assault while Vaquez Coleman was acquitted on murder charges but convicted on a drug charge, with sentencing to come later.  WSAV
  • A former Savannah police officer, Ernest Ferguson, faced a hearing at the Chatham County Courthouse Monday over charges linked to the 2022 murder of Saudi Lee—lawyers presented witness testimony, including a mental health expert's assessment, to support his bond request.  WTOC 11

CULTURE NEWS

  • SCAD Savannah Film Festival announced its first honoree, Jennifer Lopez, who will receive the Virtuoso Award. A special screening of Kiss of the Spider Woman, starring Diego Luna and Tonatiuh, is scheduled for November 1 during the festival.  WTOC 11

EDUCATION NEWS

  • U.S. News & World Report released a list of Georgia high schools ranked by college readiness, curriculum breadth, and test scores for the Savannah area. Savannah Arts Academy led the rankings—followed by Woodville-Tompkins Technical, Savannah Early College, Richmond Hill, and Islands High—highlighting the region’s top schools.  Savannah Morning News
