CRIME NEWS

  • The family of teen Shinobi Pitts launched a fundraiser for memorial and burial expenses after he was fatally shot on Pennsylvania Ave on August 21 — authorities are investigating the homicide and urging anyone with information to call CrimeStoppers.  WJCL

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tybee Post Theater marks its 10th anniversary with a 10-hour live-stream telethon on Sept. 27 at 10 Van Horne Avenue from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. The event offers free indoor shows and a family-friendly lawn party from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.—followed by a ticketed concert by Velvet Caravan from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.  WSAV
  • Savannah Rep will launch the Savannah Musical Theatre Festival from Sept. 5-7 at the Ben Tucker Theatre at the Otis S. Johnson Cultural Arts Center where four new musical works will be read, audience workshops will help shape future shows, and a live improv skit by Front Porch Improv will add extra fun—organizers expect the festival to grow as it tests fresh ideas.  Savannah Morning News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Tybee Island officials reported that heavy rain saturated the ground, causing wastewater to mix with stormwater and spill an estimated 40,000 gallons from manholes into Horsepen Creek—marking the third spill this summer. Sandbags have been placed and state agencies notified to help address damage from the aging sewer system—officials said.  WTOC 11

  • The FDA recalled over 20,000 cans of 7-Up — labeled 'Zero Sugar' but found to contain full sugar — after a Birmingham bottler recalled nearly 2,000 cases distributed in Georgia, Alabama, and Florida on July 31.  WJCL
  • The Chatham Emergency Management Agency invites local residents to review the 2025 Hazard Mitigation Plan at a meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 27, at Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens—2 Canebrake Road, Savannah, where officials will discuss strategies to reduce future disaster risks.  Savannah Business Journal
  • A class-action lawsuit was filed by Annalinda Martinez against the state for forcing poor parents to pay child support for foster care even when they could not afford it—Martinez, whose six daughters lost their home in 2018 after her ex-boyfriend was arrested for abuse, says the fees have caused serious hardship. The suit challenges fees charged between 2018 and 2022 and seeks to end the practice that has burdened low-income families.  WJCL
