- ➤ Incoming Savannah State University student Donometric 'Tank' Hambrick Jr. drowned over the weekend before moving into Wright Hall—he was remembered for his academic success and for helping 65 people through organ donation while a scholarship fund was set up in his honor. WSAV
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Chatham County police arrested 20-year-old Pranavkumar Baria on August 14 in connection with a scam that defrauded an elderly person of over $500K by claiming to be from their bank—he faces charges of theft by deception, elder abuse, and trafficking an elder person—and detectives believe there may be more victims. - ➤ A Garden City man digitized nearly 90-year-old film footage from June 1938 that shows Tybee Island beaches and the U.S.S. Savannah, and the rare film is now held by the Tybee Island Historical Society—Tommy Dilger, a 22-year-old SCAD film graduate, said the footage gives viewers a look into a past that still mirrors life today. - ➤ Chatham County Chairman Chester Ellis said he will meet with International Paper on Monday to plan new jobs for 1,100 workers as the company prepares to close its Savannah and Riceboro mills next month.
