BUSINESS NEWS

  • Georgia Power delivered the first gas turbine—assembled in Savannah—at Plant Yates and plans to add 1,300 megawatts to its fleet when the units are online; the project is set to create hundreds of jobs and will be completed by 2027.  Savannah Morning News

CRIME NEWS

  • Michelle Williams was indicted by a grand jury on malice murder, felony murder and aggravated assault charges for fatally stabbing Tiffany Jones on May 23rd near the 2000 block of Camelia Ct—officers arrived at 2:30 a.m. and tried life-saving measures but the victim died at the scene.  WTOC 11

CULTURE NEWS

  • Aziz Ansari—the star of Parks and Rec and Master of None— will perform a stand-up show in Savannah on Saturday, November 22 at the Johnny Mercer Theatre, and tickets go on sale Thursday at 10 a.m.  WJCL
  • Seven student films from Savannah Arts Academy have been chosen for the 2025 All-American High School Film Festival scheduled for October 17th—19th in New York City, with most films available to watch now and winners announced on October 19th at The Kings Theatre in Brooklyn.  WTOC 11

EDUCATION NEWS

  • REACH Public Schools— a free charter school for grades 9-12— received an 8-0 vote from the Board of Education on Aug. 13. The school offers a flexible model with self-guided curriculum, classroom learning, and career training to help students needing credit recovery or managing adult responsibilities.  Savannah Business Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Even though Hurricane Erin is expected to stay offshore, residents are urged to update their emergency plans and prepare for heavy rain and strong winds that may lead to power outages—charging devices and checking generators before storms hit.  WTOC 11

  • A Georgia Lottery player bought a ticket at Highland Shell at 485 Jimmy Deloach Parkway in Savannah and won a $1M prize by choosing a cash option for $809K last week—officials confirmed the win.  WTOC 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sen. Raphael Warnock visited MANA Nutrition’s Pooler facility on Monday morning to tour the nonprofit’s operations that produce a peanut-based meal replacement to fight childhood malnutrition—he had helped secure $12.8 million in federal funds after previous USAID cuts. His visit marked his first time at the site as he saw boxes of the meal replacement and plans for future expansion.  Savannah Morning News
