COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Over the next several months, Savannah Morning News will use newsroom resources to study hunger in our community—focusing on how low wages, high food costs and cuts in federal aid affect children, seniors and working families. The investigation will show the root causes of food insecurity and help guide efforts to find lasting solutions.  Savannah Morning News
  • On Monday, Mike Hanlon—executive chef at Ukiyo—added his Japanese-inspired Vanilla Rice Custard to SCI Meals on Wheels during the 65th anniversary celebration and provided a recipe for Chicken Kabayaki for future meals, while SCI President Patti Lyons said the new menu options bring fresh joy to seniors.  WSAV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Georgia still has five operating lighthouses along its coast that visitors can tour for their rich history. The Tybee Island Lighthouse now serves as a museum—Cockspur Island Lighthouse was relit in 2007—and these sites provide a glimpse into the state’s maritime past.  Savannah Morning News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Savannah-Chatham Public Schools launched a new 24/7 AI chatbot called Let's Talk to help parents, students, staff and community members get answers in 13 languages on its website. The program, approved on May 7 with a $452,100 three-year budget, gathers feedback and speeds up replies—unresolved inquiries are sent to team members—so the district can better serve its community.  Savannah Morning News

  • City Hall staff will welcome City Council and the public back to the Council Chambers on Thursday, Aug. 14 — the first regular meeting after completing the first two phases of the interior restoration project.  Savannah Business Journal
  • On Friday, Georgia election officials testified in Rockmart and recommended changes to state election laws to build trust by altering ballots, tightening voter registration, and adjusting absentee deadlines—steps meant to stop last-minute rule changes. They also urged ending drop boxes and switching to hand-marked paper ballots—proposals due to the committee by Dec. 1.  Savannah Morning News
