CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Savannah Police arrested 20-year-old Malik Lawson on Sunday afternoon in south Savannah after a shooting left one man hospitalized—officers responded around 3:30 p.m. on Eisenhower Drive near Truman Parkway and charged Lawson with aggravated assault, firearm possession during a felony, and property theft while the victim remains in critical condition at Memorial Health University Medical Center. - ➤ Country music star Dwight Yoakam will perform at Enmarket Arena in Savannah this November as part of his Cosmic Roundup & Rodeo Tour—he will share the stage with The Mavericks and Junior Brown. Tickets for his November 14 concert will go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. WJCL
- ➤ The Savannah Voice Festival returns for its 13th season on August 7 with concerts, family-friendly shows and educational programs at local venues. - ➤ More than 150 teachers attended a four-day orientation at Robert W. Groves High School last week as the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System prepares for the new school year starting Aug. 4—district officials reported 90 classroom vacancies and noted that over 450 new staff were hired. New teacher programs such as SOFIE, GaTAPP, and THRIVE support ongoing training, and a one-time $500 teacher grant will be discussed during a district planning day today. Savannah Morning News

- ➤ Chatham County Police Department will reactivate school zone speed cameras on August 4 as Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools begin the academic year. The cameras will run 45 minutes before school until 30 minutes after dismissal on school days and will start on August 7 at St. James and on August 13 at St. Andrews—with the Georgetown K-8 zone remaining off for renovations.
