COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Officials in Savannah announced that an 8,200-square-foot resource center for homeless people will open downtown next spring at 702 W. Oglethorpe Ave. —Union Mission will run the facility with expanded day center services, medical exam rooms and other amenities funded in part by a $1 million donation from Parker’s Kitchen. GPB News
- ➤ Renegade Paws was awarded a $100K grant from PetSmart Charities to expand pet care in west Savannah (31415) where many families struggle to access veterinary clinics and pet supplies. The grant’s first phase runs through the end of the year and will fund surveys, focus groups and community events to plan pop-up clinics and mobile vet services. WSAV

- ➤ A Tybee Island resident jumped from a second-story window to escape a house fire on Tuesday at 7th Street that completely destroyed the home and left four people with nothing — she fractured her back and local donors and businesses are stepping in to help her recover. WJCL
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Chatham County police are searching for 16-year-old runaway Haylee Kleinschmidt who may be at risk due to a serious medical condition—residents are asked to call 911 immediately if they see her. WTOC 11
- ➤ Savannah police are seeking 16-year-old Franklin James (5ft, 10in, about 150 lbs) in connection with a shooting at Oglethorpe Mall on July 2; anyone with tips is urged to call CrimeStoppers (912-234-2020). WJCL
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ For the first time in the district history, every Savannah-Chatham teacher will receive a one-time grant of 500 dollars as part of the FY26 budget—teachers choose supplies by filing for reimbursement or via district-approved orders. Additional details on accessing the grant will be shared when teachers return to the classroom in late July. WTOC 11

- ➤ Michael McCord, a former blue-collar worker turned business consultant, launched his campaign for Congress in Georgia’s 1st District on July 23rd to bring practical leadership to working families and small businesses; he will host a public launch at Lulu’s Chocolate Bar on Whitmarsh Island on August 20th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.—aiming to challenge career politicians in his district. - ➤ GDOT contractors closed lanes and ramps from Thursday at 9 p.m. until Friday at 5 a.m. to complete I-95 northbound configuration with a new connecting lane that uses a barrier to reduce late lane changes for the I-16 exit— a key step in the 16@95 Improvement Projects— GDOT said. WTOC 11
