COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Tybee Island made its beach wheelchair program even more accessible by moving chair pickup to an office at 1509 Strand Avenue—helping people with disabilities enjoy the beach. The change came after years of a less convenient service run by the fire department and was boosted by a donation from Savannah AMBUCS that provided eight new chairs.  WTOC 11

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Georgia DNR and Manomet staff visited the Ogeechee Bar on July 15—one of the last breeding grounds for shorebirds and seabirds—to rope off sensitive nesting habitat after noticing disturbances such as dog paw prints and a dead chick.  Savannah Morning News
  • Georgia DNR has proposed to add four new islands to the Bird Island Rule to protect nesting sites threatened by rising tides, predators and pet disturbances — including key areas like Ogeechee Bar and Brunswick Bird Island. The state Board of Natural Resources will review these amendments on September 23 after a recent hearing and a public forum on Aug. 6, with written comments due by Aug. 22.  Savannah Morning News

  • Today, the Savannah Downtown Business Association announced a $1,000 donation to support the Savannah Police Department’s upcoming Back to School Bash—this contribution was made possible by SDBA member support from the SDBA Gives raffle.  Savannah Business Journal
  • The City of Savannah has selected two new leaders effective immediately—Saesha Carlile has been chosen as Chief Operating Officer for the Management Services Service Center and Joseph Shearouse will serve as Chief of Information and Public Affairs.  Savannah Business Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Chatham County Health Department will offer free mammograms by appointment on Aug. 26 for uninsured women aged 40 and older at its main clinic parking lot at 1395 Eisenhower Drive—screenings will run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and appointments can be scheduled by calling the Breast and Cervical Cancer Program.  Savannah Business Journal
  • Chatham County Mosquito Control reported a mosquito near midtown Savannah that tested positive for West Nile virus on July 7. Officials advise residents to remove standing water and use insect repellent with DEET—measures aimed at reducing risks from possible severe symptoms.  WTOC 11
  • On Saturday, Making Over Cancer hosted an event at 40 Volume Salon in Savannah where survivors received free hair styling, makeup, and professional headshots — all sponsored by Horne Law Firm. The nonprofit planned to end its series of events with a formal gala called The Diamond Ball set for January at the Mackey House.  WJCL
